He married, 17 Apr 1849, Norwichville, Canada West, Dinah Switzer, daughter of Amos and Dinah (Switzer) Switzer. She was born 6 Dec 1832, Quebec, Lower Canada, and died 21 May 1892. She was buried in Elkader Cemetery, Elkader, IA.
Phoenix says the following:
- "From 8 March 1844 to 8 March 1848, he lived in Brantford, C.W.; then in Norwichville, C.W., till 1 May 1852; in New Scotland, C.W., till 20 Sept. 1853; in Geneva, Wis., till 7 July 1858; in Prairie du Chien, Wis., till 20 Aug. 1859; and since that time in Elkader, Iowa. He is a manufacturer of tin and copper wares, and a dealer in stoves, iron and hardware."

They settled at Strawberry Point, IA, in Jul 1870; and, in Nov 1873, moved to Elkader, where they lived in 1874. He enlisted in Aug 1861, at Burlington, IA, in the First Iowa Battery, and served for more than a year; when he was discharged at St. Louis, MO, for physical disability. ii. Rosalie Jane Whitney, b. 11 Oct 1852, Norwichville, C.W. iii. Bartley Stewart Whitney, b. 27 Mar 1854, Geneva, WI; d. 1 Jul 1863, Elkader, IA; bur. Elkader Cemetery, Elkader, IA. iv. Henry Switzer Whitney, b. 11 May 1856, WI; d. aft. 1880, then unmarried. v. Franklin Greeley Whitney, b. 20 or 30 Sep 1869, Elkader, IA; d. 26 Dec 1926, Evanston, IL; bur. Elkader Cemetery, Elkader,IA; unmarried.
