Edmund Westcott8 Whitney (William W.7, Samuel6, Isaac5, Isaac4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of William W.7 and Elizabeth A. (Maxfield) Whitney, was born 19 Jul 1840, ME, and died 26 Mar 1892, Strong, ME.

He married 29 Oct 1872, Auburn, ME, Mary Burbank Orr "both of Lewiston".[1] She was born 7 Mar 1850, ME, and died 22 Jun 1905, prob. Farmington, ME.

Both Edmund and Mary are buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Farmington, ME.

Edmund was a Civil War veteran, and his widow received a pension from the U.S. government.

From the Civil War Pension File of Edmund W. Whitney:[2]

Edmund W. Whitney enlisted in the Army 18 February 1862. He was discharged 1 March 1865. On 12 December 1863, while on a raid on Richmond, VA, he was thrown from his horse, and was dragged. His left knee was injured, and was the disability for which he was granted a disablitiy pension. At age 41, a physical examination revealed that he was 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighed 140 pounds, was dark complexion, was deaf in both ears, and suffered from catarrah. He had brown hair and blue eyes.
His marriage certificate indicates that on 29 Oct 1872, Auburn, Androscoggin Co., ME, he married Mary B. Orr. Both were residents of Lewiston, ME. at the time. They were married by G. P. Matthews, Pastor of Spring Street Baptist Church. Sometime after marriage, and certainly by 1877, they moved to Strong, Franklin Co., ME.
Edmund had one child alive at the time of application: Carroll E. Whitney, born 26 Sep 1884. Edmund died at Strong, ME, 26 March 1892. Subsequent to his death, his widow Mary lived in Farmington, Franklin Co., ME, from where she filed an application for pension benefit in May of 1892. Mary died 22 Jun 1905.
