Ezra6 Whitney (Ezra5, John4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Ezra5 and Agnes (-----) Whitney,[1] was born 29 Nov 1760, Lunenburg, Worcester County, MA,[2] and died 8 May 1842, Burns, Allegany County, NY.[3]

He married, 22 Dec 1785, Athens, Windham County, VT, Sally Hooker,[4] daughter of John3 (Joseph2, Joseph1) and Mary (Scott) Hooker.[5] She was born about 1768,[6] and died sometime between 1850 and 1855.[7]

1780 - served in the Revolutionary War as a soldier in the First New Hampshire Regiment under Colonel Joseph Cilley in the army of the United States for a period of six or nine months.[8]

1781 Taxed in Rockingham Township, Windham Co, VT.[9]

1791 Census, Athens, Windham Co, VT - the family consisted of 1 male 16 years and older [Ezra], 2 males under 16 [Horace, Erastus], and 2 females [Sally & Patsey].[10]

On 28 Feb 1793, Ezra Whitney Jun of Athens purchased land in Athens from Leonard Perham. The transaction was witnessed by Israel Scot Hooker and Mary Hooker, widow.[11]

1 APR 1795 Rockingham, Windham Co, VT - David Wilson of Rockingham in the County of Windham & State of Vermont for and in consideration of the sum of seventy pounds lawfull money ... by Ezra Whitney Junr of Rockingham ... seventy acres of land of the south end of Lot no three as lately surveyed by Jonathan Burt lying in the second right in the eleventh range of lott in sd Rockingham according ot the original survey of sd Rockingham ... this first day of April Anno Domini 1795.[12]

On 15 Sep 1797, the following was entered into the Rockingham records "These may certify whom it may concern that Ezra Whitney Jun is of and belongeth to the Universalist Society in this town & contributeth to the support of the same."[13]

1800 Census, Rockingham, Windham Co, VT, the family consisted of 1 male 45 and over [Unknown], 1 male 26-45 [Ezra], 2 males 10-16 [Horace, Erastus], 3 males under 10 [Esau, Jacob, Seiva], 1 female 26-45 [Sally], and 1 female 10-16 [Patsy].[14]

08 AUG 1809, Rockingham, Windham Co, VT, Ezra Whitney Jr of Rockingham in the County of Windham and State of Vermont, Yeoman, in consideration of thirty three dollars ... paid by William Minard Junr of Rockingham ... yeoman ... a certain piece or parcel of land ... situate & lying in Rockingham aforesaid containing four acres off of the southeast corner of the lot which I the said Whitney now lives on ... the above obligation is such that if the said Whitney lawfully and truly paid or causes to be paid the sum of thirty three dollars with interest to the said William Minard ... in good current bills in one year from the date then the above obligation is void and of no effect, otherwise it is to remain in full force & virtue ... eighth day of August [1809]. Signed by Ezra Whitney Junr, witnessed by Rufus Whitney, Horris Whitney, and Erastus Whitney.[15]

Ezra is listed on the 1810 census in Rockingham, Vermont as 'Ezra Whiting Jr'. Although the name is incorrect, the number and ages of the children match his expected family perfectly. The family consisted of 1 male 45 and older [Ezra], 2 males 16-26 [Horace, Erastus], 2 males 10-16 [Esau, Jacob], 2 males 0-10 [Royal, Andrew], 1 female 26-45 [Sally], 1 female 16-26 [Patsy], and 1 female 0-10 [Sally].[16]

19 MAY 1812 - Ezra Whitney of Rockingham in the County of Windham & State of Vermont for & in consideration of the sum of one dollar ... paid ... by William Minard Junr of Rockingham ... four acre of land situate lying & being in said Rockingham when off of the south east corner of the Lot of land I sold & deeded to said Min[unreadable]ley a Mortgage deed so called - bearing the date the 8th day of August ... 1809 ... this 19th day of May ... 1812. Signed by Ezra Whitney, witnessed by Horatio Whitney and Erastus Whitney.[17]

01 DEC 1812 Rockingham, Windham Co, VT, 'Whitney, Ezra Junr' was taxed 1 Dollar 12 1/2 cents. He owned 3 Lots, 0 Rights, 11 ranges, 112 1/2 acres.[18]

"The first Whitneys in this vicinity appear to have been two - and perhaps three - brothers, sons of Ezra Whitney, a Vermont farmer and builder. They arrived early in 1817, if not the year before, since the record indicates they bought land from Daniel McCurdy at Garwoods in February 1817. A letter written by one of the sons, probably Esau, and mailed from Ossian in June that year reports to the family in Vermont that frost on the last day of May had damaged the grain and "killed all the fruit". The writer also reported that a "freshet" on June 21 had washed out part of the mill dam, perhaps the one built four years earlier by Daniel McCurdy. From this information we gather that the Whitney sons had planted crops in preparation for the arrival of the family that summer. Leaving Horace behind to settle the family's affairs, the large party trekked overland from Vermont with three large wagons, three yokes of cattle, eight horses - most of them ridden by the boys, a herd of cows, a drove of hogs and other animals. They also had a carryall drawn by horses to transport the women. Tradition holds that the extra milk from the cows was deposited in a churn, the jouncing of the wagon producing butter as the party moved west. When the oldest son joined them later, the family must have numbered at least a dozen since Ezra Whitney had nine surviving children at the time and Horace had already married in Vermont. The Vermonters soon gave their name to the valley of the Canaseraga Creek, extending from near what was in recent years the Sam Whitney farm in Ossian into Garwoods. Down to the early 1850's Whitney Valley remained the name of the Post Office at Canaseraga while Whitneys Crossing served in the same capacity at Garwoods until the Post Office there was closed in the 1930's.[19]

1818 Canaseraga, New York was formerly known as "Whitney's Valley" in honor of Ezra Whitney, who in 1818 took up quite a tract of land near Garwood station, and gave his name to adjacent parts of the valley of the Canaseraga.[20]

1818 Moved to Burns, Allegany Co, NY from Vermont. He brought with him a somewhat numerous family, two of his sons being married, and took up a large tract of land in the vicinity of Garwood Station.[21]

Ezra built a framed house in 1819, one of the first built in the town.[22]

1820 Census, Orcean (Ossian) Township, Allegany Co (now Livingston Co), NY, the family consisted of 1 male 45 and older [Ezra], 1 male 26-45 [Erastus], 4 males 16-26 [Esau, Jacob, Seiva, Royal], 1 male 16-18 [Royal], 1 male 10-16 [Andrew], 1 female 45 and older [Sally], and 1 female 16-45 [Patsy]. Seven people were engaged in agriculture [all of the men].[23]

1830 Census, Burns Township, Allegany Co, NY - the family consisted of 1 male 70-80 [Ezra], 1 female 60-70 [wife], 1 female 40-50 [Patsy], and 1 female 20-30 [Sally]. Two people were listed as engaged in agriculture.[24]

1840 Census, Burns Township, Allegany Co, NY - the family consisted of 1 male 80-90 [Ezra], 1 female 70-80 [Sally], and 2 females 10-15.[25]

Ezra Whitney was a Revolutionary War veteran. From his pension file number R11485 available from The National Archives,[26] it appears that Ezra's wife had some obstacles when she attempted to get a pension for his military service. There are several declarations by family members in the file.

On 3 December 1845, Sally Whitney, a resident of Burns, Allegany Co., NY, aged 77 years, declared that Ezra Whitney, her late husband, had always told her that he had served in the First New Hampshire Regiment under Colonel Joseph Cilley in 1780 for a period of 6 or 9 months and that he was born in 1759 in New Hampshire. Sally, whose maiden name was Sally Hooker, married Ezra in December 1785 in Athens, Windham Co., VT. They lived in Windham Co. until 1817 when they moved to Burns, Allegany Co., NY where they continued to live until his death on 8 May 1842.
On 3 December 1845 Andrew Whitney, son of Ezra, aged 41 years, a resident of Burns, Allegany Co., NY presented his fathers discharge that he found among some old papers in an old chest.
On 13 December 1845 Lucretia Franklin, resident of Allen, Allegany Co., NY in her 74th year declared that she was the sister of Ezra Whitney, now deceased. She remembered seeing her mother and older sisters preparing clothes for Ezra and that they made him a knapsack. She did not remember seeing him leave, but remembered that he was gone at least 6 months and understood that he had gone into the army. She remembered when Ezra had married Salley Hooker, but was not present. Her father at the time lived in Rockingham, Windham Co., Vermont but the marriage took place in Athens. She remained there until 1806 when she moved with her husband to Middletown, Delaware Co., NY and lived there until 1826 when she moved to her present place of residence in the same county where Ezra lived and where he died.
On 1 November 1845 Isaac B. Wilson, town clerk of Athens, Windham Co., VT declared that the records of Athens indicated that Ezra Whitney and Sally married 22 December 1785.
