Horrible Murder in The TOWNSHIP OF CHATHAM - A Man’s Brains Dashed Out With A CLUB! THE MURDERER STILL AT LARGE. $100 REWARD OFFERED FOR HIS CAPTURE.
Last Sunday Mr. Warren Stafford, of Westfield, was visiting at the house of his brother-in-law, Elijah Whitney, who lives in Chatham township, when some difficulty arose between Mrs. Floyd Whitney and Mrs. Elijah Whitney, the step-mother of Floyd Whitney, over a fruit jar. Mr. Stafford, wishing to maintain peace, stepped between the two women and separated them and told them they must not quarrel. After the separation of the women, Floyd Whitney’s wife went home and informed her husband that Warren Stafford had struck her. Whitney immediately started for his father’s house where Stafford was. Whitney was not seen until he stepped up to the door, and placing one hand on the side of the door, and with the other he raised a murderous-looking club, and struck the said Stafford (who was sitting just inside the door) on the head, killing him almost instantly. Warren Stafford was a man of about 25 years of age, and Whitney about 30. The funeral services of Stafford were largely attended, on Tuesday of this week, at the Jamison school house, Rev. Peck, of this place, officiating.[1]
