Family:Whitney, George F. (c1826-1883)
George F. Whitney (Daniel), son of Daniel and Adeline (Scammon) Whitney, was born about 1826, Bangor or Hampden, ME, and died 7 Feb or 7 May 1883, National Home for Disabled Volunteers, Togus, ME, aged 58 years. He was buried in Togus National Cemetery, Togus, ME.[1]
He married, 1 Jan 1853, New York City, NY, Catherine E. (-----) Fossett. She was born about 1801, New York City, NY, and died Mar 1903. She had married firstly, David Fossett, born about 1809, England. He was buried 10 June 1850, Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.
George F. Whitney and his wife Catherine received a pension from the U.S. government for his service in the Civil War. His mother also applied for a Mother's Pension, believing his widow did not deserve a pension. That application was rejected because the soldier left a widow. George lived with Catherine only a short period of time after their marriage, and then returned to live with his parents or in a soldier's home.
Co. E, 2nd Maine Regiment; bur. Togus National Cemetery, Togus, ME. He enlisted 25 Apr 1861, Brewer, ME, aged 35, born Hampden, ME,[2] and was discharged 26 Nov 1862. In 1875, he was living in Togus, ME, in a home for volunteer soldiers; disability, malarial fever, from the Peninsular Campaign; admitted 20 Nov 1875, aged 50 years, married; relative Mrs. Adeline Whitney, Hampton Road, Bangor, ME; transferred to S. Branch 30 Aug 1877; re-admitted 26 Aug 1882; re-admitted 28 Sep 1882 to labor 6 months without pay; died in Hospital 7 Feb 1883; bur. Sec. C, Row 3, #29.[3] In 1877, he was living in Hampton, VA; born East Hampton [sic], ME; relative father Daniel Whitney; disability resulting from malarial fever; admitted 7 Sep 1877; aged 52 years; widowed; transferred from E. Branch; dishonorably discharged 13 Sep 1880 for binging in whiskey; re-admission refused by the Board of Managers 11 Jul 1882 (see printed minutes in page 747).[4]
George and Catherine had two children, but they have yet to be identified.
