John Whitney, parentage not proven, was born Feb-Mar 1777, Lincoln, MA, and died 6 Nov 1851, Warren, ME, aged 74 years 8 months.

Marriage intentions were published 20 Dec 1807, Hope, ME, for him "of Hope" and Lydia Russell "of Waldoborough", daughter of Levi and Hannah (Simmons) Russell. She was born about 1779, and died Jun 1858, Warren, ME.

"WHITNEY, John, b. in Lincoln, Mass., in 1777; came from Union to W[arren] in 1819; m. Lydia Russell; r[esided] W[arren], near Mt. Pleasant; and d. Nov. 6, '51. Their chil. 1, John, (2d,) m. Jane Kiff; r[esided] Centreville, R. I. 2, James, b. Sept. 1, '13; m. Belinda S. (Orff) Day, Feb. 22, '52; r[esided] N. E. Warren. 3, Russell, b. Jan. 1816; m. Henrietta L. McKellar of Cam[den] Sept. 26, '52; and d. Nov. 22, '59. James's chil. 1, Lavina E., b. March 20, 1855; in W[arren] Russell's chil. 1, Lydia J., b. Nov. and d. Dec., 1853; 2, Alden R., b. Feb. 14, 1855; in W[arren]."[1]

"RUSSELL, Levi, of Plymouth, Mass., probably of English Puritan descent; served as a soldier in the war of the Revolution; m. Hannah SIMMONS of Duxbury, Mass., settled and r[esided] and died in Waldoboro. Their chil. 1, Lydia, b. ab 1779, m. John WHITNEY r[esided] W[arren] and d. in June 1858. . . ."[2]

In Sep 1840, he sold a farm in Warren, ME, to Russell Whitney for $500, "Fifty acres more or less with buildings being the same now occupied by me".

Notes

He is alleged to be a son of Solomon6 and Mary (Fay) Whitney. Proof seems to be lacking, but Solomon was having children in Lincoln, MA, in the 1770s, so it is a reasonable guess. The fact he gave the middle name "Fay" to his son John supports that. The fact that he lived in Hope, ME, where Solomon's son Levi lived, and Solomon's putative son Charles also lived, also supports that.
