From the Whitney Whistler, Vol 2, #3
John Converse Whitney, born in Freeman, Maine, May 7, 1822, married Lucy Soule in Salem, Maine; she was born May 19, 1831, and died Sept. 18, 1878. A farmer, he resided in Salem, Maine, and removed to Markesan, Green Lake, East Wisconsin. Children of John and Lucy:
- Joshua S., born in 1844, resided Simpson, Minn.
- Ralph W., born July 12, 1865, married Carrie B. Richards.
Concerning the place where they resided in Wisconsin, Markesan is a city in the township of Mackford, Green Lake Co., WI. It is there that this family is found in the 1880 census. And, lo and behold, Lucy is still with them in that census. Her demise in 1878, reported above, was premature! The census has Lucy, 54 years old, born in Maine, living in the household with her husband John, her 83 year-old father, Joshua Soule, and their 15 year old son, Ralph. The source of error in her date of death remains unknown. In 1880, their son Joshua resided in his own household in Mackford. He probably resided in Simpson, WI, prior to 1880.
