Joshua4 Whitney (Cornelius3, Joshua2, John1), son of (Cornelius3 and Sarah (?Shepard?) Whitney,[1] was born 1 Dec 1724, Groton, MA,[2] and died 4 Dec 1811, Granville, NY, aged 97 years.[3] He was buried in Lee-Oatman Cemetery, South Granville, NY.[4]

He married, date and place unknown, [?Joanna?] -----,[5] parentage, birth, and death unknown.

He moved with his parents from Groton, MA, to Killingly, CT. Probably his marriage and births of his children occurred there. At some point he moved to Hancock, MA, and finally to Granville, NY, where his son Joseph was living.

Since none of his children were recorded in the vital records of Connecticut or Massachusetts, and no probate records for him have been found, it is difficult to give a list of his children. Eliminating those known to belong to his cousins of the same name, and considering the migration of family groups from Killingly to Hancock to Granville, one can construct a tentative list, given below.

Children of Joshua4 and [?Joanna?] (-----) Whitney:

i. (prob.) Rufus5 Whitney, b. say 1751;[6] m. Sarah Graves.
ii. (prob.) Joseph Whitney, b. 24 Oct 1753, Killingly, CT;[7] m. Anna Ames.
iii. (poss.) Benjamin Whitney, b. -- Oct 1755, Killingly, CT;[8] m. Sarah Bassett.
iv. (prob.) Matthias Whitney, b. 14 Jan 1757, Killingly, CT;[9] m.(1) Dorcas Vaughan; m.(2) Olive Doty.
v. (poss.) Joanna Whitney, b. say 1759;[10] no further record.
vi. (prob.) Cornelius Whitney, b. -- --- 1761, Killingly, CT;[11] m. Sarah Church Cady.
vii. (prob.) Isaac Whitney, b. about 1766, Killingly, CT;[12] m. Phebe Gould.
viii. (prob.) Joshua Whitney, b. said 1769, Killingly, CT;[13] m. Phebe Parker.
