Josiah5 Whitney (Eliasaph4, Nathan3, John2, Henry1), son of Eliasaph4 and Mary (Bishop) Whitney, was born 8 Jul 1764, Stamford, CT,[1] baptized 5 Aug 1764, Darien, CT, and died 1 Oct 1850, Darien, CT.

He married firstly, 1 or 2 Feb 1798, Stamford, CT, Mary Smith,[2] daughter of John, Jr., and Martha (Smith) Smith. She was born 1 Nov 1770, Stamford, CT, and died 8 Jan 1829, Darien, CT.

He married secondly, 4 Nov 1829, Darien, CT, Sally Waterbury.[3] She was born about 1777, and died 31 Mar 1852, aged 86 years, Darien, CT, buried Noroton River Cemetery, Darien.[4] She probably was the widow of James Waterbury, who died 8 Oct 1827, age 59 yrs, and was buried next to her. Even if this is correct, her maiden name would not be known.

Phoenix says the following:

Josiah Whitney, b. at Stamford, Conn., 8 July 1764; bap. at Middlesex, now Darien, Conn., 5 Aug. 1764; married 1 (family-record says 2) Feb. 1798, at Stamford, by Rev. Marmaduke Earl, Baptist, to Mary Smith, dau. of John, Jr., and Martha (Smith) Smith, of Stamford, where she was born 1 Nov. 1770. They settled at Darien, and there died; she, 8 Jan. 1829; he, 1 Oct 1850, of typhus fever, aged 86 years. He had a pension of thirty dollars per year, from 4 March 1831 to the end of his life, for his service as a private in the Revolutionary War.

ii. Mary Ann Whitney, b. 29 Mar 1801, Darien, CT;[6] "Marian" m. 22 Oct 1826, Darien, CT, George Mather, "both of Darien".[7]
iii. Walter Whitney, b. 25 May 1803, Darien, CT;[8] m. Caroline Matilda Disbrow.
iv. Charles Edwin Whitney, b. 3 Feb 1806, Darien, CT;[9] m. Rosanna Mather.
v. Cordelia Whitney, b. 24 Feb 1810; joined the church at Darien, 3 Jan. 1831; "Cornelia" m. 8 Nov 1841, Darien, CT, Henry Morehouse "both of Darien";[10] they were living in Darien in July 1874.

Josiah5 and Sally (Waterbury) Whitney had no children.
