Reuben Whitney (John), son of John and Larissa (Sutherland) Whitney), was born 7 Aug 1842, St. Catharines, ON, Canada, and died 15 Apr 1900, Aurelia, IA.

He married, 7 Jul 1863, Lansing, IA, Mary McAndrew, daughter of John and Mary (Davie) McAndrew. She was born 2 Jan 1840, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and died 14 Nov 1888, Aurelia, IA. She was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Aurelia, IA.

A native of Canada, moved to Clayton County, Iowa with parents in 1851.

After marriage, he moved to McGregor, Iowa when there was but one house in that town. [Some accounts say that the couple lived near Postville, Iowa.] Engaged in farming there until 1869, when he moved to Aurelia to engage in the stock and grain business.

There is no record of Rueben and Mary having owned any land in Clayton County, Iowa, so it is assumed that they rented land to farm or on which to live.

In 1869, he and wife Mary homesteaded adjacent lands south of the town of Aurelia, living in sod houses. This land was in section 22 of Pitcher township. Photo shows the land in sections 22 & 23 of Pitcher township (Cherokee County, Iowa) homesteaded by Mary and Reuben. Land is shown on 1907 plat as "W.G. Whitney."

Their son John M. later recalled this journey from Clayton County to Aurelia as involving many families and covered wagons, pulled by horses, oxen, and mules. See John's information in Geni for more complete story.

After homesteading, they moved to the town of Aurelia. Built the first house in that town in 1870. (Northeast corner of Main and 4th street). This house has been restored and is open to the public. It features a unique dual entry that allowed visitors to enter Reuben's office or the family living room through separate doors.

He hauled lumber from Denison, Iowa (70-80 miles away) to build the first grain storage warehouse and first lumber yard in 1871.

The grain elevator he operated shipped the first grain on the Illinois Central Railroad in 1871.

In its centennial edition in Fall of 1871, the Cherokee Daily Times newspaper reported: "News and Gossip--R. Whitney, the lumber and coal merchant of Aurelia, is doing a thriving trade. We know he is for he pays the printer like a Christian. Success to Whitney and long may he wave."

Was a councilman shortly after the original incorporation of the town of Aurelia, Iowa in 1881-83. (Mayor in 1891-92.) Member of Masonic lodge of Cherokee.
