Seth Harding8 Whitney (Josiah Francis7, Silas6, Josiah5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Josiah Francis7 and Mary (Moore) Whitney, was born 2 Jul 1851, Augusta, ME,[1] and died 1923. He was buried in the North Vassalboro Cemetery, North Vassalboro, ME.

He married firstly, 3 Dec 1873, Yarmouth, ME, Emeralda "Emma" F. Reed,[2] daughter of Sewell and Sarah Jane (Hanscomb) Reed. She was born 3 Jul 1852, Durham, ME, and died 28 Dec 1903, Topsham, ME. They were divorced.

He married secondly, 26 Apr 1889 [but 1900 census says married 12 years], North Vassalboro, ME, Hannah H. Getchell, daughter of Goodrowh and Sarah (Coombs) Getchell. She was born 1836, Vassalboro, ME, and died 25 Apr 1912, North Vassalboro, ME. She was buried in the North Manchester Meetinghouse Cemetery, Manchester, ME.

He resided North Vassalboro, ME.

i. Cora L.9 Whitney, b. 1868, Brunswick, ME; d. 16 Jun 1913, Topsham, ME; m. ca. 1885, Richard R. Pratt, son of Stephen Pratt, b. Apr 1846, Bowdoinham, ME, d. 17 Sep 1908, Topsham, ME. He had m.(1) bef. 1872, Ellen Nellie Stuart, b. ca. 1855, Lewiston, ME. They had one child, George Alvin Pratt, b. ca. 1872, Bowdoinham, ME. Children:
a. Frank R. Pratt, b. 5 Feb 1894, Brunswick, ME.
b. Gladys Emma Pratt, b. 19 Sep 1896, Brunswick, ME.
c. Hattie Augusta Pratt, b. 17 Jan 1898, Brunswick, ME; d. 23 Oct 1898, Brunswick, ME.
ii. (child) Whitney, b. -----; d. bef. 1900; not in census records; deduced from 1900 census of Emma.

iii. Charles F.9 Whitney, b. 16 Aug 1886, North Vassalboro, ME; d. 13 Mar 1964, Augusta, ME; m. 29 Jul 1920, Augusta, ME, Bedena Wing, dau. of Henry R. and Nellie (Leavitt) Wing, b. 9 Jun 1898, Winthrop, ME.

Notes

Cora L. Whitney is first found in the 1880 Census of Topsham, ME with her parents, Seth & Emma Whitney. In the 1900 Census, she is married to Richard R. Pratt, and resides in Topsham, ME with her children and her mother, who is divorced. Emma’s death record also says that she was divorced.

Cora’s death record says her father was John Bragdon, and her mother’s maiden name was Emma Whitney.

Emeralda F. “Emma” Reed Whitney’s death records says her parents were Sewell Reed and Sarah Jane Hanscomb. Emma had a sister Ellen A. Reed who was married to Jonathan Bragdon.

Analysis: Seth Whitney married Emma Reed in 1873, and Cora was born in 1868, 5 years before her parents were married, and they were young teenagers when she was born. Sometime after her birth, and their marriage, her parents divorced. Cora’s death record claims John Bragdon as her father and Emma Whitney as her mother. This could infer that she and her mother may have resided with Emma’s sister Ellen and her husband Jonathan Bragdon after the divorce, and Cora finished growing up in that household.

The 1900 Census of Vassalboro, ME claims Charles was 11 years old, born in 1888. However, his birth record says he was born in 1886, before the marriage of his parents, as shown in their marriage record.
