Family:Whitney, Stephen (1784-1852)

Hon. Stephen⁷ Whitney (Josiah⁶, Josiah⁵, Richard⁴, Richard³, Richard², John¹), son of Josiah⁶ and Anna (Scollay) Whitney, was born 1 Jul 1784, Harvard, MA,^[1] and died 13 Jul 1852, Conway, MA, aged 68 years, of dropsy.^[2]

Marriage intentions were published 13 Jan 1810, Deerfield, MA, for him and "wid." Mary A. (Burgess) Williams "of Goshen",^[3] daughter of Benjamin and Susanna (Manter) Burgess. She was born 12 Jul 1786, Goshen, MA, and died 1868, Saratoga County, NY. Intentions of marriage had been published 18 Oct 1806, Deerfield, MA, for her "of Goshen" and Isaac Williams. Isaac died 8 Sep 1807, Deerfield, MA, in his 23rd year.

Stephen Whitney was born in Harvard, MA. He resided in Nelson, NH, but subsequently, in 1806, removed to Bloody Brook, Deerfield, MA. He was a prominent merchant and a man highly respected and esteemed in the community where he lived. He was representative from Deerfield in the Massachusetts General Court in the years 1834 and 1835. In 1834 he was monitor of the first division of the House and a member of the committee on accounts. He was also monitor in 1835, and in the same year one of the commissioners who had charge of the construction of the enlargement of the State Lunatic Asylum at Worcester. His wife was the daughter of Dr. Benjamin Burgess, who was for a long series of years the country doctor in Goshen, MA, and of whom it was truly said, "And a man he was to all the county dear." Mrs. Whitney's sister married Mr. Mitchell Dawes of Cummington, and was the mother of Hon. Henry L. Dawes, whose long and distinguished career as a leader of his profession and as representative and senator in the Congress of the United States is well known to the people of Massachusetts. He resided Conway, MA.

Since this is Susan C. (Whitney) Wakefield, whose mother was Mary A. (Burgess)(Williams) Whitney, who cannot be otherwise found, it seems probable that "Mary B. Whiting" was actually "Mary B. Whitney", and her age of 60 must be understated. The identity of "James J. Whiting" (possibly also a Whitney) is currently unknown.
