William Gaines9 Whitney (William Wallace8, Joshua7, Joshua6, Thomas5, William4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of William Wallace8 and Myra (Clark) Whitney, was born about 1835, New Orleans, LA, and died 1882, probably in Washington, DC.

He married firstly, but nothing is known of his first wife.

He married secondly, 13 Feb 1869, Ashfield, MA, Hattie Luana Hall, daughter of Alvin and Rhoda (Thwing) Hall.[1] She was born 24 Dec 1842, Ashfield, MA,[2] and died after 1900.

In 1871 his occupation was "Gentleman".

He was murdered by his brother-in-law, James Y. Christmas, in 1882.

Children of William G.9 and Harriet L. (Hall) Whitney:

i. Myra C.10 Whitney, b. Dec 1869 (twin), NY.
ii. William W. Whitney, b. Dec 1869 (twin), NY.
iii. Alvin Hall Whitney, b. 15 Sep 1871, Deerfield, MA;[3] d. 15 Sep 1871, Deerfield, MA, aged 1 day, of cause unknown.[4]
iv. Zuline Whitney, b. Oct 1872, NY; m. ca. 1893, Milo C. Summers.

Notes

Pierce, apparently incorrectly, calls him James G. Whitney.

James Yancey Christmas was his brother-in-law by virtue of marrying, 9 Oct 1863, Warren Co., NC, "Rhoda G. Whitney". James and Rhoda appear in the 1870 census in Warrenton, NC (under surname Christman), she aged 30, born in LA. If this age is accurate, she was too young to be a full sister. Possibly she was actually Rhoda Gaines, putatively William's half-sister, and daughter of Edmund Pendleton and Myra (Clark)(Whitney) Gaines. Rhoda named a son William Whitney Christmas, presumably after her older half-brother.
