Salmon Deforest9 Whitney (Robert Shaw8, Albert Appleton7, Appleton Downer6, Asa5, Joshua4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of Robert Shaw8 and Emily (Hicks) Whitney, was born near Rochester, Lorain County, Ohio on 29 November 1871. He died on 9 June 1932 in his daughter Edna's house in Homewood, Cook County, Illinois.

Salmon was a carpenter and house builder. He built many of the older houses in Homewood, including the one in which he lived.

He married Mary Louise Whitney on 9 May 1894. She was born on 12 Nov 1877 in Norway and died on 18 Oct 1953 in Homewood, Illinois. Her parents were Thorvald Andersen and Lena Marie Jansen.
