Herbert was a farmer and a logger.
After Nellie died, Herbert married Della and fathered another son, Darrell T. Shute of Kettle Falls OR. and two daughters, Mildred and Shirley. He moved to Colville, OR. in 1966. He was a charter member of the Kettle River Grange.
