He is identified as Joshua B. Whitney, Jr., son of Joshua B. and Wealthy Jane (Estee) Whitney of Andover, Massachusetts. The father's ancestry is unknown, but he was born in Dexter, Maine.

On 8 May 1908 from Middlesex County, Massachusetts Joshua B. Whitney, Jr. signed a Declaration for Pension. He testifies that he is 64 years old and a resident of Everett, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. He enrolled at Bangor, Maine on 25 August 1863 as a Private in Company F, 4th Regiment of Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was transferred to Company F, 19th Regt. Maine Vol. Infantry, and then to Company F, 1st Regiment of Maine Heavy Artillery. He was honorably discharged near Washington, D.C. on 11 September 1865. His description at the time of enlistment was: 5 feet 7 inches tall, light complexion, hazel colored eyes, brown hair, his occupation was blacksmith. He was born 16 January 1844 at North Andover, Massachusetts. After his service he has lived at Greenbush, Maine about 3 years, Peabody, Mass. for 2 1/2 years, Wilmington, Delaware 2 years, and the Boston Vicinity ever since. His current post office address is 114 Chestnut St., Everett, Mass. The Declaration was atteste! d by Charles S. Hawkes and Everett S. Dodge, both residents of Everett, Mass. In further testimony on 10 June 1908, he says that he cut his foot near Brandy Station, Virginia. Dr. Cobb sewed it up. Afterwards he went to the Division Hospital, where he had charge of the tent.
In further testimony he says that he enlisted 25 August 1863 in Bangor, Maine. He had lived in Greenbush, Maine prior to enlistment, and his post office address was Milford, Maine. In this testimony he adds that he lived for 6 months in Lincoln, Maine between Greenbush and Peabody after the war. In the summer of 1872 he removed from Peabody to Wilmington, Delaware. From Wilmington he moved to Danvers, Mass. At the present time he is 5 feet 7 ½ inches tall, weighs 212 pounds, with brown eyes, white hair, and a fair complexion. The big joint on the big toe of his right foot was cut in half.
He further testifies that he is married to Lucie E. Whitney, nee Lucie E. Paul. They were married 10 September 1894 by Richard F. Andrews, Jr. at Boston, Mass. He was previously married to Sarah E. Putnam at Wilmington, Delaware on 18 September 1872. They were divorced at Boston, Mass. on 13 September 1893. He has no children. Joshua received a pension at $12.00 per month commencing 11 May 1908.
Joshua received an increase in benefits to $17.00 per month commencing 17 May 1912. At this time he lives at 7 Wyman St., Jamaica Plan, Suffolk Co., Mass. In the Declaration requesting this increase, Joshua testifies that after leaving Greenbush, Maine he lived in Danvers, not Peabody, Mass. for 2 ½ years. After returning from Delaware, he lived 3 years in Danvers again, 7 years in Wakefield, Mass, and then 29 years in Boston. In a Declaration for further increase in 1914, Joshua now resides at 108 Swan St., Everett, Mass.
By 1920 Joshua remains living in Everett, Mass. But he is now suffering from chronic interstitial nephritis complicated by myocarditis. He states he moved from Boston to Everett in 1905. He was last paid at $72.00 per month to 4 June 1925, and was dropped from the rolls because of his death on 17 June 1925.
On 23 June 1925 from Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, Lucie E. Whitney signed a Declaration for Widow's Pension. She is 75 years old, and she was born 20 April 1849 at Lynn, Mass. She married Joshua B. Whitney, Jr. 10 September 1894 under the name Lucie E. Paul at Boston Mass. They were married by Richard F. Andrews, J.P. She had not been previously married, and Joshua had been previously married once, His first wife was Sarah Elizabeth Putnam. They were divorced at Boston on 12 September 1893. The soldier died 17 June 1925 at the Soldiers' Home in Chelsea, Mass.
The death record for Joshua states that he died 17 June 1925, age 81 years, 5 months, 1 day. His residence had been Everett, Mass., and his occupation was blacksmith. He was born in Andover, Mass. and died at the Soldiers' Home, Chelsea, Mass. His father's name was Joshua B. Whitney, born at Dexter, Maine. His mother's name was Wealthy J. Estee, born at Derry, New Hampshire. He died of intestinal carcinoma, and is buried at Pine Grove, Lynn. Mass.
The copy of the Record of Marriage for Joshua B. Whitney, Jr. and Lucie E. Paul states that they were married in Boston, Mass. on 10 September 1894. Both are residents of Boston. It is his second marriage and her first. He is a laborer and she a domestic. He was born in Andover and she in Lynn, Mass. Joshua's parents are Joshua B. and Wealthy J. Whitney. Lucie's parents were William and Lucy Paul. They were married by Richard F. Andrews, J.P. This copy of the record is flawed. It states that at the time of marriage, Joshua was 28 years old, and Lucie was 23. In fact, Joshua was 50 and Lucie 45 years old.
The certificate of Decree of Divorce, Absolute for Joshua B. Whitney Jr. and Sarah E. Whitney states that on 23 February 1893, a divorce from the bond of matrimony was decreed between Joshua B. Whitney, Jr. of Boston and Sarah E. Whitney of Danvers, Mass. The cause of the divorce is desertion on the part of Sarah E. Whitney. The decree was made absolute on 12 September 1893.
Lucie E. Whitney died 2 May 1927 at 28 Morris Street, Everett, Mass. She was buried in Lynn, Mass. She died of colon cancer and arteriosclerosis.
