Private, Company B, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment
Lemuel B. Whitney was enrolled on 23 July 1862 at Bangor, Maine in Company B, 1st Regiment of Maine Heavy Artillery Volunteers to serve three years, or during the war. He was mustered into the service as a Private on 21 August 1862 at Bangor. He was killed in battle on 19 May 1864 at Spottsylvania, Virginia.
On 8 June 1864 from Penobscot County, Maine Sarah P. Whitney, widow of Lemuel B. Whitney, signed a Declaration for Obtaining a Widow's Army Pension. She is a resident of Bangor, Penobscot Co., Maine, and is 41 years old. She declares that she was married to Lemuel B. Whitney on 2 January 1848 at Lincoln, Maine by Rev. A. J. Bates. She believes there is no public record of the marriage, nor is there a private or family record. She is able to procure a record of her publishment and the affidavit of eye witnesses. Her maiden name was Sarah P. Miller.
The names and ages of her children under 16 years of age at the time of her husband's death are: Abner P., born 29 September 1848; Frederica B. H., born 15 June 1852; and Jesse B., born 3 September 1856. They reside with her in Bangor, Maine.
In the file there is a certified copy of the publishment of marriage intentions from the records of the Town of Lincoln, Penobscot Co., Maine. It is certified by William R. Ayer, Town Clerk. It states "Mr. Lemuel B. Whitney and Miss Sarah P. Miller, both of this town, intend marriage. Lincoln, December 18, 1847". The copy goes on to further state that there is no record of the marriage found in the records of the Town of Lincoln.
There is also in the file a notarized marriage certificate. It was written 13 June 1865 before David Chamberlain, Justice of the Peace. It states that Mr. Lemuel B. Whitney of Lincoln and Miss Sarah P. Miller of Lincoln were joined in marriage in Lincoln on 2 January 1848. It is signed by Benjamin B. Byrne, Minister of the Gospel.
The file contains a record of births of two children to Lemuel B. and Sarah P. Whitney. Frederica B. H. Whitney was born 15 June 1852, and Jessie Benton Whitney was born 5 September 1856. The record is attested by George W. Snow, City Clerk, and dated 31 July 1867. (Note: the 1850 census for Lincoln, Maine has Lemuel and Sarah and son Abner living in Lincoln. Abner was probably born there.)
