INSERT WHITNEYS OF MAINE Benjamin Whitney, whose middle name was Franklin, was born in Sebago, Maine, in 1840. With wife Matilda Jewell, he moved to Upton, Maine about 1865. He built a log cabin on the north side of Bethel Road. By trade he was a shoemaker, but by avocation he was a dancing teacher (now that is something to think about)! Being quite musical, he played the violin. Matilda died March 16, 1905, and Benjamin died August 26, of the same year. Their children were: Arabella E, born in Sebago, married Albert Lombard. William, born August 25, 1870, in Upton, married Rose B. Brown, from the area, and upon her death, he married Lavonne Chase Powell. These two had three children; Carrie, who married Elsworth Lombard, Charles and Leroy. Marshall S. Whitney, brother of Benjamin, also moved to Upton. His wife, Sally Libby of Sebago improved the Chase Farm. About 1890 they moved to Byron, Maine, prospecting for gold. They had four children; Perley, Elizabeth, Millett, and Jess. His wife s name was Hannah, and he was the brother of Captain Jonathan Britton s wife Buelah. In April 1777, Micah Whitney, blacksmith, bought from Nanthali Whitney of Gorham a tract of land in Gorham. He worked on the road in Otisfield in 1779, and he is mentioned as ~ne of the first fourteen families in the area when the Britton family arrived in the town. Merrill Whitney of Saco said that Micah was born in York, Maine in 1752, was living in Gorham. in 1782 was in Otisfield, and 1809-10 was in Gray, Maine. The 1790 census lists in Gorham, one by this name, head of household, with 2 males under 16, and 4 females, including his wife. What happened to him? Moses Whitney was one of the early settlers. According to the diary of one Ben Patch, he caine to the area, October, 1777, and moved his family into his house Dec. 6, 1777. He was with that early group of people, although possibly not one of the first fourteen families. Later he settled at Edes Falls in Raymond, now called Casco, Maine. Several times he moved before locating permanently. The 1790 census lists him as of the Raymondtown Plantation, and head of a family having one male over 16, one under 16, and 3 daughters. Moses Whitney had been a merchant in Boston, where he met with financial disaster, as did his partner George Peirce. He followed Peirce to Maine, to find his fortune again. He was a Revolutionary soldier, lived to a freat age, and died in the town of Phillips, Maine. His wife lived to be over one hundred, and she died in Raymond, Maine. Abner Whitney moved into Otisfield, Maine from Mass. His daughter Beulah married Capt. Jonathan Britton, from the old Britton family, and worked at the George Peirce place at the time they met. Abner had many sons; Uriah, Samuel, Micah, and Elijah, one of whom died in North Yarmouth, Maine. Beulah Whitney Britton died 1785. William Whitney came from Casco, Maine around 1835-8, and bought in the area of Bell Hill. He had a blacksmith shop there. Eventually he moved to Webbs Mills, and died soon after, in August of 1845. He had children; Martha, Nancy, and a son.
