JOHN WHITNEY embarked at London, in the month of April, 1635,
with his wife ELINOR and five sons, for New England. The fol-
lowing month he arrived at Charlestown, and forthwith proceeded to
Watertown, where his son JOSHUA was born, July 15, 1635. In June, he
bought a sixteen-acre "homestall," which had been granted to John
Strickland, who was dismissed from the Watertown Church, May 29, 1635.
This continued to be the permanent residence of Mr. Whitney, although
he afterwards acquired by grant and purchase numerous tracts of land.
He was admitted freeman, March 3, 1635-6; appointed Constable and
Collector of Watertown by the court, June 1, 1641; Selectman, 1638 to
1655 inclusive; and Town Clerk, 1655.
&nbps; His wife ELINOR, the mother of his eight sons, died May 11, 1659;
and he married, Sept. 29, 1659, JUDAH CLEMENT, whom he survived.
He died June 1, 1673. His will, dated April 3, 1673; Inventory, June,
1673.
The entry of his death in the town-records is as follows: --
1673. "John Whetny, widdower, deceased the first of June, aged
abought 84 yeares."
The following is the record of the embarkation, to be found in a
"manuscript volume in folio, containing the names of persons permitted
to embark at the port of London, after Christmas, 1634, to the same
period in the following year." This volume is in the Public-Record
Office, London; and, on page 35, we find, --

In the Elizabeth & Ann, ROGER COOPER, Master, &c.; to be im-
barqued for New England, having taken, &c., &c.; and likewise
brought, &c., &c.

This record is correctly given in Volume VIII. of the Third Series
"Massachusetts Historical Collections;" and where, too, may be found
other lists of passengers in the same vessel.
It seems probable that the ages of John Whitney and his family, as
given at time of embarkation, were all too young. For instance: Mr.
Whitney
, if but thirty-five in 1635, would have been buth seventy-three
or seventy-four at his death in 1673; whereas the town-record states that
he was "aged nearly 84."
John, the oldest son, whose age was given as eleven in the list, was
married in 1642, when he would have been but eighteen or nineteen
years old.
Richard, the second son, mentioned as being nine years old in 1635,
was excused from military service by the court in 1691, as being "70
years of age;" whereas, according to the list, he would have been but
sixty-five years of age.
