manded by his father-in-law, Capt. Joshua WHITNEY. Soon after his marriage in 1778, he moved to Gilsum, N.H., and erected a house. In 1798 he erected another more spacious, and just as he was fairly settled in his new quarters the old residence was destroyed by fire. The first records in Gilsum relating to the poor is, "Voted to allow Samuel WHITNEY one pound four shillings for his services in warning folks out of town." He was often chosen by his fellow-citizens on important committees and filled various offices. Was moderator of the town meetings, 1796-1800-6-15; select- man, 1798; school committee, 1790. In 1797, while living in his first house, his wife did her cooking out of doors in an oven built for that purpose. On day when get- ting ready to bake a let of mutton, she set the pan on the ground while she went into the house. When she came out a bear was just carrying off her dinner. Catch- ing up the oven poker she chased it away and saved her mutton. Mr. WHITNEY was known all over that section of country as Squire WHITNEY, having been justice of the peace from 1811 to 1826, and was often called upon to perform marriage ceremonies. He was representative in the Legislature in 1805-7-11. He was one of the most respected citizens in the town. When he went there in 1780 he had a jack-knife and 25 cents in money. While at work clearing his land, he hung his jacket on a limb of a tree; it caught fire and he was left without anything. He paid for his place by catching wild pigeons. Palmer WHITNEY was born in Warwick, Mass., where he resided until a short time after his marriage, when he moved to Java Village, N.Y. and kept a public house for a number of years.
