He was a blacksmith. In 1812 he moved to New Hampshire, where he became a capable machinist. The firm sent him to Brownsville, New York to apply his skill and knowledge at improving a cotton factory. Asa Whitney became associated with the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad Companies. From this position he made his reputation and came to the attention of the State people who were enlarging the Erie Canal. He became the Canal Commissioner for New York State. In 1860 Asa Whitney became President of the Reading Railroad. He founded the chair of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Asa Whitney This Asa Whitney was born in 1797, and died in Washington, D.C. in 1872. He is credited with suggestion that the United States build a railroad across the entire continent. He lived to see this happen in 1869. He appealed to Congress in 1853 and started the whole idea of a cross- continental railroad to join the nation together. James Amazia Whitney Born in Rochester, New York 30 June, 1839, James Whitney became a lawyer. He removed to Maryland, and later to Otsego County, New York where he was educated. He was at times the following; Chemist, mechanic, engineer, writer (patent). In 1868 he became the editor of the "American Artisan." He was responsible for building a modern working Navy. QUERIES John Linus Whitney, Sr. was killed by a holdup robber on the way back from the gold rush to his home in New York. His bag of gold worth $75,000 was taken. His wife, the former Mary Amanda Whitlock, of Ct., back in New York, gave birth (posthumously) to their son John Linus Whitney, born 14 Dec., 1850. Somewhere between 1850 and 1859, Mary Amanda Whitlock Whitney married Daniel Shattuck (from New Hampshire). These two moved to Darke County, Ohio with Mary A s father, John Whitlock and wife, and a James Whitlock and wife Sarah. This James was about 15 years younger than Mary A. so may not have been her brother (unless her father had married twice). John Linus Whitney, Jr. married Margaret Replogle , daughter of Jacob and Abigail Replogle of Ohio (Darke Co). They had a son, John Clifton WhitneW who married Kathrine Middleton, and they also had Eugene Middleton Whitney (my father). My father states that Grandmother Katherine told him that when she had the name researched, she learned that a Mrs. Shields of Elkhart, Indiana was related to our family. In a 1940 telephone book from Elkhart I found a Mrs. E.A. Shields living there on 407 South Second St. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family? We also believe that our family is registered with the Colonial Dames by Mary Elizabeth Whitney in 1935 9. Could we hear from someone about this family? Mrs. Mary (Whitney) Grumbling, P.O. (The Colonial Dames records are unavailable to the public; however they do have many lineage books in print, and that is where you would look, Editor) Looking for the father of Newell Whitney, born in Conneaut, Ohio in 1821, and married Eliza Ann Fenton. He died 10 Dec., 1824. He married Esther Weeks. He was a Minuteman, and was from New York State. Mrs. Melvin L. Lesher, Rural Route lB X7, Clarion, Iowa, 50525. Need any information on the parents of Haynes and Calvin Whitney who came to Thomaston, Maine early in the 1800 s. Haynes married Jane Robinson, and Calvin married Eliza Everton. Am looking for any information on the following Whitney entries in the LDS IGI: Calvin Whitney, son of Daniel Whitney and Eunice ? born 23 August, 1790, Cheshire, Chesterfield Twp., New Hampshire. Daniel T. Whitney, son of James Whitney and Mary ? born 26 Feb., 1772, Cheshire, Winchester Twp., New Hampshire. Daniel Whitney, son of Sylvanus Whitney and Hannah ? born 12 April, 1761, Hi11sboro, Dunstable Twp., New Hampshire. Calvin Whitney, son of Orlando Whitney and Aeneth ? born 4 Sept., 1795, Windsor, Ludlow Twp., Vermont. Mrs. Marion Whitney Leska, 712 South Prairie Av., Barrington, Illinois, 60010. (Have you checked the input sources, etc. of the IGI for the original source from which the Mormon record of this was derived? Editor) In 1808 James Chaffin and Betsey Chaff in were married. They were cousins. Their fathers were brothers. In Betsey s line it has been established by Pierce that her mother was Mary Whitney, and this is the line: John 1; Richard 4; Richard 26; Richard 109; Daniel 379; and Mary 1037. Betsey died in January of 1845 in Alexandria Bay, New York. In March of that year James married a Deborah Whitney. Family papers suggest that Deborah was Deborah Mansfield, and that she may have been married first to a Mr. Lovell. Thus, her name at the time of her marriage to Mr. Whitney may have been Deborah (Mansfield) Lovell. And there may have been a relationship between Betsey and Deborah Whitney s lines. When Deborah Mansfield Lovell married James Chaf fin the children already in the family were Mariah, born 1832, Elias, born 1837, Samuel, born 1841, and Sarah, born 1843. If these were the children already in the family they would have to be the children of Betsey Chaff in Whitney. In the census records Mariah, Elias, and Samuel list their birthplace as New Hampshire. Sarah lists hers as New York. Deborah Mansfield Lovell Whitney lists her birthplace as Maine. In 1880 Elias Whitney lists both parents as having been born in Maine! (Before this it was New Hampshire)! In 1900 Elias Whitney lists his mother as having been born in New Hampshire, but his father has no record listed! The daughter of James and Betsey (Whitney) Chaff in, Mariah, married the son of James, James Remington Chaffin. (Would this be possible? Editor). They were married in Lockport, Niagara County, New York. In 1850 they are in Wisconsin. In 1860 they are still in Wisconsin. However, Elias, Samuel and Sarah are missing. In the early 1870 s Elias is married in Wisonsin and in those records he states his father s name is Samuel and his mother is Deborah! In 1865 James died in Iowa, and Mariah died there in 1878. In writing her memoirs, one of Mariah s daughter said that after her mother died (Mariah), her "Aunt Sarah" (sister of Mariah) remarried and took her grandmother Deborah (Mansfield Lovell Whitney) and youngest sister to live with them and they went to Kansas. She stated that they went to Cawker City "where Uncle Sam lived," Here they stayed while her father went out West to Phillipsburg where he got a homestead. In the 1880 census "Uncle Sam" is not living in Cawker City, but in Glen Elder, six miles from Cawker. In Cawker City there is a Whitney running a hotel. This Whitney is listed in Pierce s book. We assume there is a connection between this W.C. Whitney and Deborah s family, and may be the reason Deborah went there. Can anyone help us with these lines? Arthur S. Hart, 916 Red Oak Lane, Fort Worth, Texas, 76114. WOULD YOU BE KIND ENOUGH TO SEND NEW QUERIES FOR THE NEW YEAR? I FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DIG OUT AND USE THE OLD ONES FROM PAST ISSUES. AND, SOMETIMES RE-WORKING YOUR QUERY BRINGS RESULTS. WHITNEY HERALDRY The heraldry of the Whitney family (John of Watertown) has been established by Thomas Fuller in his "History of the Worthies of England." He states that the arms of Sir Robert Whitney, of Whitney, Knight, and sheriff of Herefordshire in the year 1377 (the first year of Richard the Second). The arms bore "Az, a cross checky or and Gules." Before this date it is not known if the family bore arms, but it is supposed that the heraldry was born during the Crusades. The College of Arms notes that these remained the same until John Whitney migrated to America in 1635. The same authorities describe the crest that went with the arms as "A bull s head, couped sa. armed arg. the points gu." The motto of the Whitneys of Herefordshire was "Galllantly uphold the cross." All the Whitney families in Great Britain apparently retained the original crest unaltered: the Whitneys of Merton, Wexford; Whitney of Cheshire, in Gloucester; Whitney of Herefordshire; Whitney of Shropshire; Benjamin Whitney,Esq. of Upper Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin, Ireland; Fetherston Whitney, Edmund Whitney, Esq. of Neopass, County Westmeath, Ireland. The Whitney arms and crest alone, and a shield with sixteen quarterings, are shown at the College of Arms, London, England. TAKEN FROM "THE DESCENDANTS OF ANDREW WARNER" Tamar Whitney married in June, 1795, John Stoughton Strong. She was born 9 July, 1779, and died 2 August, 1856. She was the daughter of Jonas and Tamar (Houghton) Whitney. John Strong was a merchant in Strongsviiie, Ohio. He lived there after 1818. He kept a hotel there at one time. At another period he sold cattle through Ohio, Kentucky, Boston and New York; driving his cattle before him and selling them as he went along. The children of John and Tamar were: Emory; Renda, who married Dr. Benjamin Olds; Stoughton, who died young; Warner, a merchant in Strongsvil]e, Ohio; Franklin; Clark Ross; Lavina, who died young; Lavina, who married Jabez Lyman Burrell; John Chapman; Lyman Whitney; and John Stoughton. Alva Wright Warner, the daughter of Susan Amelia Warner, married Julius A. Manchester, and had, in Colebrook, Ct., a son, Ernest Beach Warner who was born 23 March, 1868, and married 21 Dec., 1910, Jessie A. Whitney.
