Westfield was created out of part of Springfield in 1669. Part was split off as Southwick in 1770. Territory was ceded to Southwick in 1779. A section was made into the new town of Montgomery in 1780. The New Addition section was split off as Russell in 1792. Land was given to West Springfield in 1802.
