Family:Whitney, Addis (c1862-b1889)
Addis Whitney, parentage unknown, was born circa 1862, NY or KS, and died probably before 1889.
He probably married, 20 Aug 1884 or 8 Feb 1885, perhaps Delaware Township, Lincoln Co., SD, Elsie B. Myers of Lincoln Co., SD. She married (2), by 1889, Isaac F. Smith.
In 1886 he graduated from Amherst.
Probable children of Addis and Elsie B. (Myers) Whitney:
i. (probably) Joseph A. Whitney, b. 19 May 1885, SD. He was the step-son of Isaac F. Smith and son of Elsie B. (Myers) (Whitney) Smith.
Notes
In the 1900 census, Joseph A. Whitney is listed as "step-son" in the household of Isaac F. and Elsie V. (-----) Smith. His father is listed as having been born in NY, his mother in WI. Elsie is listed as having had 2 children, both alive, but her marriage to Isaac F. Smith is listed as her first. Thus, Joseph A. Whitney could have been an illegitimate son of Elsie and an Addis or Addeus Whitney.
Was he perhaps Addis Merrill Whitney, b. 1862, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Co., NY, d. 1935, Swampscott, MA? This man traveled as a Waterworks and Gasworks Engineer in the "West". Lived in Duluth, MN 1889, Denver, CO, 1890, and Cheyenne, WY, 1894. Involved in real estate speculation.
Also, note that Elsie's birthplace is listed as NY, but Joseph A. Whitney's mother's birthplace is listed as WI. Was he actually her son?
