Notes

The 1840 census suggests that Samuel had more children than those listed above. An 1850 census record for Samuel has not been located which could shed additional light on other children. Some of the older individuals listed in 1840 may have been nonrelated farm laborers. If they are his children, it would suggest that he had been married previously as Eliza would not have been of child bearing age to have them. Since an 1830 matching U.S. census has not been found; one possible scenario is that his first wife died in Canada, he remarried the much young Eliza and removed with the family to Hammond. However, no records have been found yet that supports this theory.

There is some confusion as to the given name of Samuel's daughter Dettie. The 1860 census record indicates her given name as Justina E., but records after this date show a given name of Dettie E. These records include census records as well as the Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947. Her death record lists Samuel and Eliza as her parents and a birth location of Hammond, NY that leads one to conclude the Justina and Dettie are the same individual. It is unknown if her given name at birth was Justina and she went by Dettie later in life or if the 1860 census listed her name as Justina in error.
