Alva Lewis Whitney (Horace Selden), son of Horace Selden and Lucinda (Cole) Whitney), was born 4 Jun 1826, Erie, PA, and died 21 Mar 1906, Plover, IA. He was buried in Powhatan Cemetery, Plover, IA.^[1]

He married firstly, say 1859, Lucy Colby. She was born about 1840, and died 1864, Green Co., WI.

He married secondly, 1 Jul 1866, Attica, WI, Mary Emily Kelley alias Smith, daughter of David and Mary Merinda (Pratt) Kelley, stepdaughter of Joel Smith. She was born 4 May 1846, Salisbury, NY, and died 28 Jan 1938, Plover, IA. She was buried in Powhatan Cemetery, Plover, IA.^[2]

He served as a Private in Co. E, 8th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry.^[3] He also served as a Corporal in Co. K, 42nd Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry.^[4] On 18 Jun 1878, from Wisconsin, he applied for a pension based on service in Co. E, 8th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry.^[5]
