Family:Whitney, Asa (b1774-a1830)
Asa6 Whitney, parentage unknown (but see Notes below), was born before 1774 (aged 26-44 in 1800), and died after 1830, OH.
Marriage intentions were published 31 Oct 1791, Peru, MA, for him and Joanna Jackson, daughter of Joshua and Prudence (Stedman) Jackson. She was born about 1771, Hinsdale, MA, and died six years before her husband.
"His grandfather, Asa Whitney, a native of New England, married a Miss Jackson. They were among the very first settlers in this part of the country, where they owned two hundred acres of heavily timbered land. Asa Whitney died in Ohio at an advanced age, his wife having passed away about six years previously. They brought up four sons and three daughters, none of whom are now living."[1]

Notes
It seems possible that he was a son of either John5 and Molley (Carey) Whitney or Jabez5 and Experience (Fairbanks) Whitney, but this is far from certain. This is due to the fact that his marriage intentions were filed in Partridgefield (later Peru), MA, where John and Jabez were the only known male Whitneys then residing. Jabez's sons seem to all be accounted for otherwise. John is supported by the probable record of John Whitney in 1810 in Smyrna, Chenango Co., NY, not far from Lisle, and the marriage of John's granddaughter Amanda Taft to Chauncey Whitney, a putative son of Asa.
