Brayton Whitney (Daniel), son of Daniel and Arvilla (Marsh) Whitney, was born 22 Jul 1828, Hounsfield, Jefferson Co., NY, died 5 Aug 1892, Hesper, Winneshiek Co., IA, buried in Burr Oak Cemetery.

He married 30 Dec 1852, Brownville, Jefferson Co., NY, Martha Rockwood, daughter of Lewis and Sybel (Cummings) Rockwood. She was born 17 Nov 1834, Brownville, Jefferson Co., NY, died 4 Dec 1896, Hesper, Winneshiek Co., IA, buried in Burr Oak Cemetery.

Brayton and Martha Rockwood Whitney, natives of the state of New York, married there and came west in 1857. They first settled in Wisconsin, near the town of Watertown. In 1861 he enlisted in Company B, 29th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and later he was transferred to the 16th Ohio Light Artillery. After three years of loyal service he received his discharge and returned to Watertown. He was also a sailor for many years on the Great Lakes, his run between Oswego and Chicago, when it was yet Fort Dearborn. In the year 1867 they came to Hesper township. He purchased a farm in Section 18, where they lived all the rest of their lives. He and his wife became the parents of seven children.

Cratsenberg, daughter of Ahndrew and Julia (Phelps) Cratsenberg. She was born Mar 1857 probably in Lewis Co., NY, died 1935, Decorah, Winneshiek Co., IA, buried in Burr Oak Cemetery. No children.
ii. Perry H. Whitney, b. May 1858, Watertown, Jefferson Co., WI; m. Ellen Loretta Keefer.
iii. Clara L. Whitney, b. 30 May 1861, Watertown, Jefferson Co., WI; m. Sherwood Benedict.
iv. Milton D. Whitney, b. 28 May 1868, Hesper, Winneshiek Co., IA; m. Fannie Ruth Maltby.
v. Claude Rockwood Whitney, b. 26 Feb 1871, Hesper, Winneshiek Co., IA; m. Nellie May Miller.
