Charles Percival8 Whitney (William Harrison7, Calvin6, Jonathan5, James4, Joseph3, Jonathan2, John1), son of William Harrison7 and Mary (Bixby) Whitney, was born 13 Oct 1847, Northfield, OH, and died 3 Dec 1926, Mt. Vernon, WA, aged 79 years. He was buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, WA.[1]

He married, Dec 1875, Florence, KS, Anna Julia McLean, daughter of James Kerr and Elizabeth Ann (Donnell) McLean. She was born Jan 1855, Greenville, IL, and died 21 May 1906, Mt. Vernon, WA. She was buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, WA.[2]

"A county history says that Charles grew up in Wisconsin, where he received 'an education such as the schools of that sparsely settled frontier afforded and time would permit'. After farming in Wapello co, IA for a while, in 1873 he moved to Marion, Marion co, KS, where he 'devoted his energies and abilities principally to the real estate and insurance business with good success'. He and Anna were married in Kansas, but must have spent some time in Iowa with Charles' family, for their twins were born at Bladensburg. They returned to Kansas, where the three younger children were born.

"The 1880 census lists them in Doyle township, Marion county, where he was a farmer, employing two farmhands and a herder. Their three-year-old twins are listed as Innie and Minny. The agricultural schedule shows that Charles was renting 140 acres, where he had six horses, two mules, seven milk cows, 15 other cattle, 20 swine, 42 poultry, 80 acres of corn, 30 of wheat, and 20 of hay. In 1879 he made $600 for his farm produce.

"In 1891 the family relocated to Mt. Vernon, WA. Charles continued his sales career there, the 1900 census showing him as a 'sewing machine agent'. In 1901 he was elected justice of the peace, in which office he served for four years. After that he worked as a traveling salesman for the Spaulding Buggy Company of Grinell, IA.

"The Whitneys were members of St. Paul's Episcopal church at Mt. Vernon. Anna was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Rathbone Sisters. She died in 1906 at the age of 52 of breast cancer, from which, her obituary says, 'she ha[d] been a patient sufferer for some time. [She] underwent an unsuccessful operation several weeks ago in Bellingham and was later told by Seattle doctors that her case was hopeless. All the immediate members of the family were at the bedside at the time of her death, which was very peaceful'.

"Charles survived his wife by 20 years, apparently doing some traveling during that time. In 1910 he went by train to Kamloops, British Columbia, where he had relatives and may have stayed for an extended period and become a Canadian citizen. In 1918 he is said to have been living in Sacramento, California, and in 1924 in San Francisco. In 1926 he had three strokes over a period of six months, the last of which was fatal. He died at the home of his daughter Inez Hannaford, where he had been taken after suffering his first stroke at the home of his brother Frank in Forest Grove, OR. He and Anna are both buried in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows cemetery at Mt. Vernon, where their monument is a stout red granite column with a large ball on top.

"Charles is said to have been 'a man of earnest purpose, able in his business and commanding the respect of his associates. Mr. Whitney is one of the substantial factors in the progress of his community'.
