Francis G. Whitney (John Ball), son of John Ball and Susan M. (Titus) Whitney), was born Feb 1848, OH, and died 8 Aug 1915, OR or WA. He was buried in Buncombe Hollow Cemetery, Etna, WA.[1]

He married, 3 Jul 1866, Lake Co., OH, Mary E. French,[2] daughter of Bronson and Samantha (Weeks) French. She was born Jan 1849, OH, and died 17 May 1919, Yaquina, OR. In some records she is called Mary E. Malone, because she was step-daughter of Melvin and Samantha (Weeks)(French) Malone. She was probably the Mary E. Whitney who died 17 May 1919, Lincoln Co., OR.[3]

He served in Cos. B & D, 67th Ohio Infantry, during the Civil War. He applied for an invalid pension 8 Oct 1885, application #552,287, certificate #424,559. His widow Mary E. Whitney applied for a widow's pension from WA, 10 Nov 1915, application #1,055,651, certificate #808,151.[4]

The story passed down is as goes. Frank Whitney and Isaac Runyan had been sent to the same Hospital during the war to recover. Isaac being wounded during the battle of Saline. After Isaac's quick recovery they both began to nurse the wounded there until the end of the civil war. They became fast friends. Isaac had spoken so much about coming to Washington State and starting anew that Frank followed with the group and began his own farm here.
