James Whitney, Esq. (James, George), son of James and Ann (-----) Whitney, was baptized 9 Jul 1724, Norton Canon, Herefordshire, England, and died 13 Apr 1796.

He married Eleanor Bannister, 2 May 1754, Yazor, Herefordshire, England. She was born about 1733, and died 6 May 1802.

Sacred to the Memory / of JAMES WHITNEY, Late of CALVER HILL Esqr who departed / this life the 13th April 1796 in the 73d year of his Age / You know not at what hour the Lord cometh / Therefore repent to day / And be faved for ever. / Alfo to the Memory of ELEANOR Relict of the above / JAMES WHITNEY who departed this life / the 6th May 1802. in the 69th year of her Age. / Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord

Children of James and Elinor (Bannister) Whitney:

i. John Whitney, bp. 14 Mar 1756, Norton Canon, Herefordshire, England.
ii. James Whitney, Esq., bp. 14 Sep 1758, Norton Canon, Herefordshire, England. He died 7 Sep 1838. He married, after 26 Sep 1794, Jane (Priest)(Studley). His will, proved 11 Jan 1839 P.C.C., mentions his late wife Jane Whitney, sister in law Catherine Whitney, and nephews George, John, and James Whitney, sons of his late brother George Whitney. His wife Jane was born about 1750 and died 26 Oct 1823.
In memory of JANE the beloved wife / of JAMES WHITNEY of CALVER HILL in this parish Esquire / who having wel [----] the duties of a pious Christian / an affectionate wife, a kind relation and liberal benefactoress to the poor / after a long and painful affliction most patiently endured resigned her / soul unto the hands of Him who gave it Octr 26 AD 1823 aged 73 years / also in memory of the above JAMES WHITNEY Esqr / many years Magor[sic] on the old militia and afterwards / Lieutenant Colonel in the North local militia / of this county: he departed this life on the 7th day of / September 1838 in the 80th year of his age / respected by all who knew him.
iii. George Whitney, bp. 15 Nov 1768, Norton Canon, Herefordshire, England.

Note: The Norton Canon parish records also list a child, William Whittney, son of James Whittney & Elenor, bp. 11 May 1679. There are no other children listed at this early date and I question if this date might be a transcription mistake and this child a member of this family.
