James8 Whitney (Elijah7, Lemuel6, Joshua5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Elijah7 and Susannah (Oaks) Whitney, was born 1 Jul 1823, Springfield, VT, and died 26 Dec 1905, Springfield, VT, aged 82 years 5 months 26 days, of la grippe.[1]

He married, 5 Jan 1854, Springfield, VT, Martha Damon,[2] daughter of Bartlett and Eunice (White) Damon. She was born 1 Jul 1822, Springfield, VT, and died 1883.

He differs from other farmers, who are worthy citizens and fairly good tillers of the soil, only in his enormous frame and his extraordinary knowledge of local history. He is childless, but ever since he has been a householder he has given a home to some boy who else would have had none outside the almshouse; resided Springfield, VT, s.p.
