James8 Whitney (Newell7, James6, Ezra5, James4, John3, Jonathan2, John1), son of Newell7 and Clarissa (Clark) Whitney, was born 20 Jan 1832, VT, and died 23 Feb 1893, Craftsbury, VT.

He married firstly, before 1855, Celestia Ursula Sturtevant, daughter of Sewell Hamilton and Orlana (Batchelder) Sturtevant. She was born 26 Aug 1834, Plainfield, VT, and died 16 Sep 1879, Craftsbury, VT, aged 45 years 23 days of consumption.[1]

He married secondly, before 1880, Josephine Godwin. She was born about 1849, ME, and died after 1880.

Frederick James Whitney, b. 11 Jul 1863, Craftsbury, VT;[5] "Dr." d. 10 Sep 1887, Craftsbury, VT, aged 24 years 1 month 17 days; possibly the "son James Whitney" reported by Pierce; m. 28 Mar 1884, VT, Mary E. "Mamie" Babcock, d. 27 Sep 1887, Craftsbury, VT, Craftsbury, VT, aged 23 years 8 months 10 days.
iv. Charles Augustin Whitney, b. 7 May 1867 (twin), Craftsbury, VT;[6] m. Emma Ruggli.
