James Alexander7 Whitney (James6, John5, Abraham4, Joseph3, John2, Henry1), son of James6 and Nancy (Mascraft) Whitney, was born 12 Nov 1818, Albany, NY, and died 3 Jun 1877, Albany, NY, where he was buried.

He married, 29 Aug 1843, Albany, NY, Mary Melicent Strong, daughter of Robert and Kitty (McMurdy) Strong. She was born in Albany, 22 July 1822, and died after 1880.

Phoenix says the following:

". . . a wholesale dry-goods merchant . . . . He always lived in Albany, . . . . He was of the firm of Strong, Whitney & Co., 476 and 478 Broadway, Albany, jobbers of dry goods, and agents for knit goods, gloves, and mittens."

i. William Strong Whitney, b. 31 Oct 1844, Albany, NY; d. 1 Dec 1872, Albany, NY, and was buried in lot 17, section 40, Albany Rural Cemetery.
ii. Catharine Louisa Whitney, b. 30 Apr 1846, Albany, NY; m. 14 Jan 1874, Albany, NY, George Horatio Redway, son of Abel and Sally Charlotte (Grinnell) Redway, b. 13 Sep 1844, Adams, NY. They settled in Albany, and were living there in 1880, without children.
iii. Anna Mary Whitney, b. 7 May 1848, Albany, NY; m. 9 Jan 1872, Albany, NY, Abram Merritt Bininger, son of Abram Merritt and Maria (Long) Bininger, b. 23 Jun 1842, New York, NY, a wine-merchant. They dwelt in New York City for one year; and then moved to Buffalo, NY, where they were living in 1874. Their home was at Brooklyn, NY, in Jun 1877.
iv. Charles Edward Whitney, b. 22 Jun 1851, Albany, NY; m. Isabella Luke.
v. James Franklin Whitney, b. 14 Jan 1854, Albany, NY; d. 15 Apr 1855, Albany, NY; and was buried in lot 17, section 40, Albany Rural Cemetery.
vi. Franklin Treadwell Whitney, b. 3 Nov 1856, Albany, NY; d. 22 Sep 1858, Albany, NY; and was buried in lot 17, section 40, Albany Rural Cemetery.
vii. Alice Millicent Whitney, b. 3 Feb 1860, Albany, NY; d. 11 Nov 1908, McLean Hospital, Waverley, MA, aged 49 years 9 months 8 days, of cystic tumor of the brain;[1] bur. Albnay, NY; m. 8 Apr 1902, Albany, NY (recorded Worcester, MA), William Francis Hyde, b. ca. 1875, South Abington, MA, son of Edward Lawrence and Imogene Adele (Clark) Hyde;[2] resided Albany, NY.
viii. Isabella Taylor Whitney, b. 3 Apr 1862, Albany, NY; and was living there, with her mother, in 1880.
