James C.7 Whitney (Sewell Pitt6, Barnabas5, Isaac4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Sewell Pitt6 and Annie (Tuttle) Whitney, was born Feb 1826, and died 15 Jul 1901, Janesville, WI, at the Rock County Farm and Alms House. He was buried at their cemetery.[1]

He married, 6 Dec 1864, Adams, Green Co., WI, Ruth Jane (Glidden) Morton, daughter of Charles and Ruth (Plummer) Glidden. She was born 30 Mar 1825, Whitefield, ME, and died 1916. She had married firstly, 8 May 1854, Lowell, MA, Ward Luther Morton, born 1827, Freeman, ME, killed 20 Sep 1863, Battle of Chickamauga.

There must have been an annulment or divorce from James Whitney, between 1864 and 1869, because she "Ruth Jane Morton" married thirdly, 2 May 1869, Jo Daviess Co., IL, George Hicks. They appear in the 1870 census of Warren, Jo Daviess Co., IL, with her son by her first husband, Chas. E. Morton, aged 15. She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Warren, IL.[2]

"Resided Northern Illinois."

"MORTON MRS. RUTH J. Farming; Sec. 30; P.O. Warren; born in Lincoln Co., Maine, March 30, 1825; came to this Co. in 1853; owns 80 acres of land; married Ward L. Morton May 8, 1853; he was born in Maine; was in Co. H, 96th I.V.I.; killed in the battle of Chickamauga; have one child, Chas. E. Morton, born Sept. 21, 1855."[3]

On 25 Jan 1863, widow Ruth J. Morton applied for a pension based on Ward L. Morton's service in Co. H., 96th Illinois Infantry, Application No. 39472, Certificate No. 23889. On 26 Dec 1865, she applied for a pension as guardian of R. L. Whitney, minor, Application No. 118270, Certificate No. 76383.

Children of James and Ruth Jane (Glidden)(Morton) Whitney, if any, unknown. A possibility is the "R. L. Whitney" from the above pension application.
