James Montford Whitney, parentage unknown, was born circa 1827, TN, and died after 1870, probably TN or MS.

He married, firstly, 29 Aug 1848, Fayette Co., TN, Charlotte E. Adams. She was born circa 1832, TN, and died after 1860.

He married, secondly, 20 Nov 1867, Fayette Co., TN, Amanda E. Hardin. She was born circa 1844, MS, and died after 1870. On 19 Nov 1867, James M. Whitney and R. P. Whyte entered a marriage bond for the sum of $1,250 to be void if James and Amanda E. Hardin were not married.

There may have been two more children from this marriage that died. Anna Jane, Morgan Adams.
