Jared7 Whitney, ([prob.] John6, Joshua5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), probably the son of John7 and Rachel (Hiscock) Whitney, was born 5 Oct 1790, Norwich, MA, and died 2 Apr 1847, Adams Township, Allen County, IN, aged 57 years.

He married, before 1817, Catharine Jane Daniels. She was born 28 Jan 1794, NY, and died after 1860.

He was apparently one of the first settlers of Jefferson Township, Allen Co., IN:

"1833 - Jared Whitney, possibly the first white man, who settled on the Maumee River."[1]
"JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP. It is believed that the first permanent settlement within the limits of this township was made by Jared Whitney and his family. He came in May, 1833, and remained during the summer on the Maumee river, but in the fall took possession of a tract on section 7, which he afterward brought into cultivation."[2]

Notes

I suspect he is the son of the John and Rachel (Hiscock) Whitney as he is found in Indiana near an Alanson Whitney of the right age to have been his son, and this Jared had a brother named Alanson. Furthermore his age at death puts his birth at the same year as John and Rachel's son Jared. The record of his birth from the Public Member Tree at Ancestry.com gives the exact same date as that of John and Rachel's son Jared, and the place as Norwich, MA.

There are many references to this family in The pictorial history of Fort Wayne, Indiana: a review of two ..., Volume 1, by Bert Joseph Griswold, Samuel R. Taylor.
