Family:Whitney, John (1789-1862)

John⁶ Whitney (John⁵, James⁴, Joseph³, Jonathan², John¹), son of John⁵ and Polley (Jones) Whitney, was born 10 Dec 1789, Fitzwilliam, NH, and died 1862, Fredonia, NY.

He married, 2 Mar 1816, Mrs. Augusta (Fisk) Brooks, daughter of Asa and Keziah (Badger) Fisk. She was born 2 Aug 1792, Sturbridge, MA, and died 1852. She had married firstly, 21 Apr 1811, Sterling, MA, Silas Brooks.

He was born in New Hampshire on a farm. Resided in Troy some time and for many years followed the sea. He was a great sailor, visited many ports in Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as those of North and South America. On one of his trips he circumnavigated the earth. After his marriage in 1824 moved to Dunkirk, NY. There is followed agricultural pursuits until the railroad through that section was built. As it passed through his farm he sold out and moved to Fredonia, NY. While living in Dunkirk he ran a vessel on the lake. He died in 1862; resided Troy, NH, Dunkirk and Fredonia, NY.

iv.	Caroline Whitney, b. 28 Mar 1820; m. 16 Aug 1839, John Culver, Ch.: Sarah, m. Peter Thompson, merchant and inventory; resided Union, PA; Edward, resided Oil City, PA; Henry and Rufus, resided Union, PA.
v.	Asa Whitney, b. 4 May 1821; m.(1) Caroline P. Tyler; m.(2) Lydia Morian.
vi.	Jefferson B. Whitney, b. 4 May 1822. No further record found.
vii.	Harlow Jones Whitney, b. 6 Sep 1825; m. Harriett Mac Kentire.
viii.	T. Augusta Whitney, b. ca. 1824, VT; m. Samuel M. Underwood. Ch.: Samuel Marion; resided Morris, IL, a merchant; Charles Curtis; resided Gardner, IL, a merchant.
ix.	Esther Ann Whitney, b. 2 Sep 1832; m. Lucius T. Gould, b. Feb 1829; d. 4 Dec 1861; m.(2) Rev. Hiram P. Eustis.
