Family:Whitney, John (1789-1862)

John⁶ Whitney (John⁵, James⁴, Joseph³, Jonathan², John¹), son of John⁵ and Polley (Jones) Whitney; born Fitzwilliam, N. H., 10 Dec 1789; married 2 Mar 1816, Mrs. Augusta (Fisk) Brooks, born 2 Aug 1792; died in 1852. He was born in New Hampshire on a farm. Resided in Troy some time and for many years followed the sea. He was a great sailor, visited many ports in Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as those of North and South America. On one of his trips he circumnavigated the earth. After his marriage in 1824 moved to Dunkirk, New York. There is followed agricultural pursuits until the railroad through that section was built. As it passed through his farm he sold out and moved to Freedonia, New York. While living in Dunkirk he ran a vessel on the lake. He died in 1862; resided Troy, New Hampshire, Dunkirk and Fredonia, New York.

i.	Lemuel7 Whitney, born 7 Nov 1816; married Fanny M. Gould and Julia M. Gould.
ii.	Densmore Whitney, born 7 Jan 1818; died unmarried
iii.	Sabrina Whitney, born 7 Jan 1819; married Norman Pier; resided Murray, New York; dau. Ella, married Thomas Mcgovern, and her son James, 12 years of age, resided Morris, Illinois.
iv.	Caroline Whitney, born 28 Mar 1820; married 16 Aug 1839, John Culver and had 4 ch.: Sarah, married Peter Thompson, merchant and inventory; resided Union, Pennsylvania; Edward, resided Oil City, Pennsylvania; Henry and Rufus, resided Union, Pennsylvania.
v.	Asa Whitney, born 4 May 1821; married June, 1842, Caroline P. Tyler; resided Bert, Kansas. Ch.: Omer, resided Elkhorn, Nebraska; Sarah Carrauth.
vi.	Jefferson B. Whitney, born 4 May 1822.
vii.	Harlow Jones Whitney, born 6 Sep 1825; married 20 Oct 1847, Harriett Mac Kentire; resided Grand Island, Nebraska Ch.: John, and Eunice, who married 1888, Simeon Woodruff; resided Joliet, Illinois.
viii.	T. Augusta Whitney, born -----; married S. M. Underwood and had 2 ch., Samuel Marion; resided Morris, Illinois, a merchant; Charles Curtis; resided Gardiner, Illinois, a merchant.
ix.	Esther Ann Whitney, born 2 Sep 1832; married Lucius T. Gould, born Feb., 1829; died 4 Dec 1861; married 2d, Rev. Hiram P. Eustis. Ch.: Charlotte A., born 21 Apr 1861; married 6 Apr 1894, Joseph Hampson; resided Saint Paul, Minnesota; Harriett Beecher, born 5 Jul 1853; married 12 Jun 1869, ---- Howard; resided Rockwell, Iowa; Edgar Fletcher, born 22 Jul 1855; married 18 Nov 1880; resided South Saint Paul, Minnesota; Mary C., born Oct. 4, 1857; married June, 1876; resided Arago, Oregon.
