Family:Whitney, John (1797-1844)

Dea. John⁷ Whitney (John⁶, Nathan⁵, David⁴, Benjamin³, John², John¹), son of John⁶ and Elizabeth (Stearns) Whitney, was born 20 Feb 1797, Westminster, MA,^[1] and died 15 Mar 1844, Westminster, MA, aged 47 years.^[2]

Marriage intentions were published 17 Oct 1821, Westminster, MA, for him and Lydia Allen "of Hubbardston".^[3] He "of Westminster" married, 1 Nov 1821, Hubbardston, MA, Lydia Allen,^[4] daughter of Deacon Ephraim Allen. She was born 4 Sep 1802, and died 19 Dec 1843, Westminster, MA, aged 41 years.^[5]

John Whitney, Jr., was born in Westminster, MA. He was a farmer and did not figure in political or professional circles. He was a stanch Christian, foremost in all movements tending to the public good.

He succeeded to his father's estate and spent his life upon it. He married Lydia, dau. of Dea. Ephraim Allen, of Hubbardston, and had a family of eight children, all of excellent character and reputation. Mr. and Mrs. W. were much interested in the education of their children, and, had a room in their house fitted up for school purposes, where in conjunction with a few of their neighbors of a like spirit, they maintained a private school for some time, the advantages of which were shared by the writers of this notice. Having been converted to the views of the Baptist denomination in mid-life, they united with the church of that faith in town, and became active and devoted members, he being appointed Dea. A fearful visitation of typhoid fever in the early winter of 1843-44 struck down nearly all the members of this house hold - the father, mother, and one child, falling victims to it. He resided Westminster, MA.

Sweetser says the following:^[6]

"Whitney, John⁷, s. of John⁶, and Elizabeth (Stearns) Whitney, succeeded to his f.'s estate, and spent his life upon it. He m. Lydia, dau. of Dea. Ephraim Allen of Hub. (pub. Sept. 30), 1821, and had a family of 8 chn., all of excellent character and reputation. Mr. and Mrs. W. were much interested in the education of their chn. and had a room in their house fitted up for school purposes, where in conjunction with a few of their neighbors of a like spirit, they maintained a private school for some time, the advantages of which were shared by the writer of this notice.
