He married, 24 Apr 1823, Waltham, MA, Jane Gilson,[2] daughter of Peter and Rachel (Dunn) Gilson, granddaughter of Solomon and Mary (-----) Gilson, great-granddaughter of John and Mary (Shattuck) Gilson, and thus a Whitney descendant, too. His obituary:

Monday, January 29, 1866 Death of an old citizen. Died in this city, on Saturday, 27th inst., of lung fever, Mr. John Whitney, aged sixty-eight years. The deceased was a native of Vermont, and came to Lowell about thirty-seven years ago, and had been always been employed by the Appleton Corporation. For more than thirty years he was the overseer in No. 1 Card-Room. He was known to a large circle as a quiet, worthy citizen, and was highly esteemed for his many genial qual- ities and nobleness of character. He was for many years a member of the First Baptist Church, and walked in all the ways of a Christian. An affectionate husband a kind father, a good neighbor and was an up- right citizen, he leaves behind not an en- emy, but many mourners. He was always in the enjoyment of good health up to within a short time. He was confined to his house since last Monday, but no great danger was apprehended until Friday night, when he suddenly grew worse, and died Saturday noon. He leaves a widow and four adult children, to mourn their loss. Funeral from his late residence, No. 33 South Street, tomorrow (Tuesday), at 10 o'clock A.M.

They lived in Chester, VT, Nashua, NH, and Lowell, MA.
