Notes

In 1850 he gave his birth state as CT, but in 1860 it was NY. His son Emmett in 1880 said NY, but in 1900, 1910, and 1920, said MA. Emmett's death certificate also said MA. Daughter Almira's death certificate says NY. Son Francis reported his father's birth as NY in 1880, Canada West in 1900, and Vermont in 1910. Son George reported his father's birth as unknown, U.S., NY, and MI, in various censuses.

Some references make him a son of George and Miriam (Hunt) Whitney, but this is impossible, since his wife was their granddaughter.
