John Charles Fremont9 "Free" Whitney (Melvin8, Erastus7, Ezra6, Ezra5, John4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Melvin8 and Ann Eliza (Hooker) Whitney, was born 21 Jan 1849, NY, probably in Canaseraga, Allegany Co, NY, and died sometime after 1910.

He married, about 1883, Margaret Smith. She was born Jul 1859, IA, the daughter of Scottish immigrants.

Like his father and his brother Hugh, he was a miller.

He was working in a flour mill in Boulder, Colorado in 1880. In 1881, when traveling back to Boulder from a visit to see his family in New York, he was supposed to have been scalped by Indians, but wrote a letter home advising his family that the report was false. In 1900, the family was living in Topeka, KS, where Fremont was working as a miller. In 1910, the family resided in Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO, where "Charles F. Whitney" was superintendant of a flour company. He has not been located after this, though his son Bayard appears again in 1920.
