Joseph6 Whitney (Joseph5, Abel4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Joseph5 and Betty (Phinney) Whitney, was born 18 Oct 1784, Gorham, ME,[1] and died 28 Oct 1841, Lubec, ME, aged 56 years.[2]

He supposedly married firstly, (said 2 Aug 1801, Gorham, ME, but see notes below), Mary Hunter "of Lubec".

Marriage intentions were published 6 Dec 1818, Topsham, ME, for him "of Lubec" and his second wife Nancy Hunter "of Topsham".[3] Marriage intentions were published 29 Dec 1818, Lubec, ME, for him and his second wife Nancy Hunter "of Topsham",[4] daughter of William and Mary (Patten) Hunter. She was born 20 Nov 1791, Topsham, ME, and died 23 May 1865, Bath, ME. She is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bath.

He was also known as Joseph Whitney Jr., to distinguish him from his older second cousin Joseph6 Whitney (1776-1870).

On 30 Mar 1824, he was Town Clerk of Lubec.[5]

Note

The date 2 Aug 1801, Gorham, ME, has been given for a first marriage to a certain Mary Hunter, but that is the date of the marriage of a different Joseph6 Whitney to Mary Freeman. That puts the marriage itself, its date, and its place, in serious question.
