Joseph8 Whitney (William7, William6, William5, William4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of William7 and Anna (Heywood) Whitney, was born 28 Feb 1794, Gardner, MA,[1] and died 12 May 1876, Gardner, MA, aged 82 years 2 months 13 days, of pneumonia and apoplexy, farmer.[2]

He "3d" married, 6 May 1818, Gardner, MA, Anna "Nancy" Putnam,[3] daughter of John and Anna (Penniman) Putnam. She was born 3 Jun 1798, Gardner, MA, and died 29 Mar 1880, Gardner, MA, aged 81 years 9 months 26 days, of paralysis.[4]

Joseph Whitney was a farmer, and lived in Winchendon, on the farm where his grandfather resided (his name was William, and the first Whitney that settled in those parts). On the death of his father he went to Gardner, and resided on the home place. He resided Gardner, MA.

ii. Eliza Whitney, b. 24 Sep 1820, Winchendon, MA;[6] d. 8 Jan 1910, Gardner, MA, aged 89 years 3 months 14 days, of broncho pneumonia;[7] m. 20 May 1852, Gardner, MA, James M. Peck, of Orange, MA, b. ca. 1817, Royalston, MA, son of Solomon and Mercy (-----) Peck.[8] He d. Fitchburg, MA. She resided Rindge, NH. Children:
a. Mary Frances Peck, b. 30 May 1856; d. 18 Jun 1877.
iii. Carolina Whitney, b. 17 Oct 1824, Winchendon, MA;[9] d. 19 Feb 1876, Gardner, MA, aged 51 years 4 months 2 days, of consumption, dressmaker.[10] Ivers was appointed admr. of her estate, 7 Mar 1876.

Why Eliza is listed with the surname "Whitney" is a mystery. She was widow Peck.
