Family:Whitney, Roswell (1764-1830)

Roswell5 Whitney (David4, David3, Joshua2, John1), son of David4 and Mary (Gunn) Whitney,[1] was born 12 Sep 1764, probably Poultney, VT, and died 14 Mar 1830, Benton, Yates County, NY.

He married 5 Feb 1788, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY, Phebe Ellsworth, parentage unknown. She was born 5 Jun 1774, place unknown, and died 1863, probably Litchfield, MI, aged 89 years. She was buried in the Old Litchfield Cemetery, Litchfield, MI.[2]

"WHITNEY, Roswell, NY Line, Phebe, R11484, sol was b 12 Sep 1764 & he m Phebe Ellsworth 5 Feb 1788 & she was b 5 Jun 1774 & their children were; Jacob b 18 Aug 1790, Deborah b 18 Jun 1796, David b 23 Nov 1798, Sarah b 8 Feb 1801, Mary b 4 Mar 1804, Mabel b 8 Dec 1806, Jane b 6 Sep 1808, Martha b 29 Feb 1811, Leroy b 6 Jul 1813, Roswell b 22 Oct 1815 & Phebe b 21 Oct 1820, sol d 14 Mar 1830 & his wid appl 28 Aug 1850 in Washtenaw Co MI a res of Saline Twnshp MI, wid referred to sol's bros David & Jacob Whitney as receiving Rev War pensions & that Roswell Whitney srv with David Whitney but not Jacob Whitney, sol had lived at "Palts" in Ulster Co NY when he enl, sol & wife with his bro David Whitney & James Decker & wife went from "Palts" NY to Poughkeepsie NY to be married at which time sol was age of 25 yrs & she "lacked 4 mths being 16" & wid stated they lived at Palts NY for 15 yrs & they had 2 sons Jacob & David & 4 daughters Deborah, Sarah, Mary & Marther then moved to Seneca Co NY & lived there 30 yrs & had 2 sons there Leroy & Roswell also 3 daughters born there; Mabel, Jane & Phebe, in 1850 7 of the children were still living, wid stated sol d at Benton in Yates Co NY & after sol died his widow moved to Willoughby OH for 4 yrs then moved to Saline Twnship MI."

iv. Sarah Whitney, b. 8 Feb 1801, New Paltz, NY; d. San Bernardino, CA; m. Simeon Crandell.
v. Mary Whitney, b. 4 Mar 1804, New Paltz, NY; probably m. Josiah Deyo. This is based on the fact that son Jacob was living with Hiram Deyo and family in 1860, and Hiram Deyo's parents were Josiah and Mary (Whitney) Deyo, as given on his death certificate. Hiram was b. 31 Jul 1822, NY.
vi. Mabel Whitney, b. 8 Dec 1806, Phelps, NY, no further record.
vii. Jane Whitney, b. 6 Sep 1808, Phelps, NY, no further record.
viii. Martha Whitney, b. 29 Feb 1811, Phelps, NY, no further record.
ix. Leroy Whitney, b. 6 Jul 1813, Phelps, NY, no further record.
x. Roswell Whitney, b. 22 Oct 1815, Phelps, NY, no further record.
xi. Phebe Whitney, b. 21 Oct 1820, Phelps, NY; apparently m. Silas Sisco or Cisco.

  • 1820 Phelps, Ontario Co., NY: Roswell Whitney, 2 male over 45, 1 male 18-25, 2 males 0-9, 1 female over 45, 1 female 16-25, and 3 females 0-9; 2 engaged in agriculture.
  • 1830, Benton, Yates Co., NY: Phebe Whitney, 2 males 15-19, 1 female 50-59, 2 females 20-29, and 1 female 10-14.
  • 1840, Willoughby, Lake Co., OH: David Whitney, 1 male 40-49, 2 males 15-19, 1 male 10-14, 2 males 5-9, 1 male 0-4, 1 female 30-39, 1 female 15-19, and 1 female 10-14; 1 engaged in manufacture or trades. He apparently didn't have his mother the widow Phebe in his household.
