Samuel4 Whitney (Richard3, John2, Henry1), son of Richard3 and Hannah (Darling) Whitney,[1] was born 5 Oct 1711, Norwalk, CT,[2] and died 20 Feb 1796, Fairfield, CT, in the 84th year of his age.[3]

He married firstly, 14 May 1740, Fairfield, CT, Amy Northrop,[4] daughter of William and Johanna (-----) Northrop.[5] She was born, 9 Nov 1722, Fairfield, CT,[6] and died 22 Nov 1788, Greenfield, CT, aged 66 years.[7]

He married secondly, Sep 1789, Easton, CT, Sarah Thorpe,[8] parentage unknown.[9] She was born unknown,[10] and died unknown.[11]

Phoenix says the following:[12]

They were members of the Congregational Church of Stratfield, now Bridgeport, Conn., from which they were admitted to that of Greenfield, now Trumbull, Conn., in Jan. 1741-41. She died 22 Nov. 1788, aged 66 years, at Greenfield, and was buried there. He married a second wife, whose name was Sarah -----. He died at Fairfield, 20 Feb. 1796, in the 84th year of his age, and was buried at Greenfield, where his gravestone preserves for him the title of Captain.

Children of Samuel4 and Amy (Northrop) Whitney:

i. Samuel5 Whitney, b. 17 Feb 1740/1, Fairfield, CT;[13] bapt. 23 Feb 1740/1, Fairfield, CT;[14] m.(1) Mariana Banks; m.(2) Rebecca Banks.
ii. Silas Whitney, b. 16 Jul 1742, Fairfield, CT;[15] bapt. 21 Jul 1742, Fairfield, 21 July 1742, CT;[16] m. Esther Sherwood.
iii. Peter Whitney, b. 6 Jan 1743/4, Fairfield, CT;[17] bapt. 8 Jan 1743/4, Fairfield, CT;[18] m. Grace Bulkley.
iv. Aaron Whitney, b. 25 Sep 1745, Fairfield, CT;[19] bapt. 29 Sep 1745, Fairfield, CT;[20] m.(1) Hannah Turney; m.(2) Sarah (Kelly) Gay.
v. Amy Whitney, b. 6 Jun 1747, Fairfield, CT;[21] bapt. 22 Jun 1747, Fairfield, CT; m.(1) 3 Nov 1768, Weston, CT, Silas Haynes.[22] She was living so late as 1817, at Weston, Conn., and was then the wife of Josiah Lyon, but is thought to have had no children.[23]
vi. Nehemiah Whitney, b. 9 Aug 1749, Fairfield, CT;[24] bapt. 3 Sep 1749, Fairfield, CT; and was there 8 Jan. 1778; but nothing more has been ascertained.[25]
vii. Sarah Whitney, b. 16 May 1751, Fairfield, CT;[26] bapt. 19 May 1751, Fairfield, CT;[27] "of Greenfield" m. John Barlow.
viii. Ransford Whitney, b. 10 Mar 1753, Fairfield, CT;[28]; m. Ruth Canfield.
ix. Lyman Whitney, b. 22 Oct 1755, Fairfield, CT; d. 25 Jan 1756, Fairfield, CT.[29]
x. Levi Whitney, b. 11 Jul 1752, Fairfield, CT;[30] died 24 Jan. 1777. Tradition makes him a soldier in the Revolution, and a prisoner in the New York Sugar House; and it is stated that he so suffered from hunger as to gnaw the flesh from his own arms, and died after the first meal that he ate after his release.[31]
xi. Ebenezer Whitney, b. 10 Nov 1758, Fairfield, CT;[32] possibly m. Martha Sherwood.
xii. Walter Whitney, b. 3 Feb 1760, Fairfield, CT;[33] m. Anah Wells.
xiii. Josiah Whitney, b. 1 Aug 1762, Fairfield, CT;[34] living at Fairfield, 1 June, 1796; a teacher; lived at Southport, and is said not to have married. This is probably an error, for the Steele Genealogy, p. 31, shows that Josiah Whitney, of Greenfield, married Hannah Steele, dau. of Capt. Bradford and Mary (Perkins) Steele, of Derby, Conn., where she was born 4 Aug., 1766. The record of the Congregational Church of Derby, Conn., shows that Josiah Whitney married Hannah Steele in March 1785. He was capt. of a military company at Greenfield Hill, Conn., in Oct. 1793. She was living in Derby 28 Nov., 1804, perhaps a widow, as her husband was not mentioned.[35]

Samuel4 and Sarah (Thorpe) Whitney had no children.

Notes

Sarah Thorpe may be Sarah (-----) Thorpe, the widow of Peter Thorpe of Fairfield, CT, who died 27 Sep 1769.
