Hon. Samuel6 Whitney (Joseph5, Timothy4, John3, John2, John1), son of Joseph5 and Mary (Hastings) Whitney, was born 7 Aug 1758, Newton, MA,[1] and died 1 Jun 1831. He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lawrenceville, St. Lawrence, NY.[2]

He married, 24 Jun 1778, Worcester, MA, Mary6 Whitney,[3] daughter of Capt. Joshua5 and Mary (Clarke) Whitney. They were third cousins by common descent from John2 and Ruth (Reynolds) Whitney. She was born 19 Jun 1761, and died 27 Apr 1835. She is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lawrenceville, St. Lawrence, NY.[4]

Samuel Whitney was born in MA, 5 Aug 1758. He moved to Worcester shortly before the Revolutionary war. April 19, 1775, he enlisted in the company commanded by Capt. Benjamin Flagg, which marched to the Lexington alarm. In 1779 he was drafted for nine months as a private in the company commanded by his father-in-law, Capt. Joshua Whitney. Soon after his marriage in 1778, he moved to Gilsum, New Hampshire, and erected a house. In 1798 he erected another more spacious, and just as he was fairly settled in his new quarters the old residence was destroyed by fire. The first records in Gilsum relating to the poor is, "Voted to allow Samuel Whitney one pound four shillings for his services in warning folks out of town." He was often chosen by his fellow-citizens on important committees and filled various offices. Was moderator of the town meetings, 1796-1800-6-15; selectman, 1798; school committee, 1790. In 1797, while living in his first house, his wife did her cooking out of doors in an oven built for that purpose. On day when getting ready to bake a let of mutton, she set the pan on the ground while she went into the house. When she came out a bear was just carrying off her dinner. Catching up the oven poker she chased it away and saved her mutton. Mr. Whitney was known all over that section of country as Squire Whitney, having been justice of the peace from 1811 to 1826, and was often called upon to perform marriage ceremonies. He was representative in the Legislature in 1805-7-11. He was one of the most respected citizens in the town. When he went there in 1780 he had a jack-knife and 25 cents in money. While at work clearing his land, he hung his jacket on a limb of a tree; it caught fire and he was left without anything. He paid for his place by catching wild pigeons. At his death he left a valuable estate. He resided Worcester, MA; Gilsum, NH, and Lawrenceville, NY.

  • 1790, Gilsum, Cheshire Co., NH: Samuel Whitney, 1 male over 16, 3 males 0-15, and 3 females.
  • 1800, Gilsum, Cheshire Co., NH: Saml Whitney, 1 male 26-44, 2 males 16-25, 3 males 0-9, 1 female 26-44, 2 females 10-15, and 2 females 0-9.

Even though the record is clearly "Lemuel", this must be an error for Samuel, who lived in Gilsum at this time, but cannot be found otherwise in the census. Furthermore, there is no known Lemuel Whitney who could have been living there at that time.
