"At Nearly 83 Samuel E. Whitney
Says He is Just Beginning to
Enjoy Life.
"HAS A REMARKABLE CAREER
"Coming to Portland in 1869 He Has

Settlement in the Forest.
"In Samuel E. Whitney, Portland has an unusually remarkable citizen. On the second day of next October this gentleman will have attained the age of 83 years, but for all that, he is still exceedingly active. For many years Mr. Whitney was engaged in the shoemaking and cobbling business, but of late years he has devoted most of his time to the cultivation of berries. This aged gentleman works in his field from morning until night with the spirit and vigor of youth. He is tried when evening comes, but he sleeps as quietly as a child and in the morning arises and spends most of the day in the field again.
"Mr. Whitney, accompanied by his wife, had the pleasure of taking an extended trip through the west last ..."[8]
