Samuel Griffin8 Whitney (Charles Whitman7, Isaiah6, Isaiah5, Isaiah4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Charles Whitman7 and Mary (Griffin) Whitney, was born 20 Sep 1819, Troy, NH,[1] and died after 1900.

He married, 24 May 1842, Troy, NH, Abbie N. Whittemore,[2] daughter of Salmon and Lydia (Wheeler) Whittemore. She was born 29 May 1820, Troy, NH, and died 25 Feb 1894, Monticello, IA.

He was a merchant in early life, but many years past has been a farmer; resided Monticello, IA.

Children of Samuel Griffin8 and Abbie N. (Whittemore) Whitney:

vii. Mary A. Whitney, b. 10 Feb 1860; d. 16 Sep 1866. "Marietta" in census of 1860.

Notes

There were unlikely to be two sons named William A. Whitney in this family, as given by Pierce. The younger one must be William H. The censuses show a son William H. Whitney, b. ca. 1849-1850, who was apparently the W. H. Whitney attending Iowa State Agricultural College in 1870, and a son George S. Whitney, b. ca. 1847-1848. George S. Whitney hasn't been found in the 1880, 1900, 1910, or 1920 censuses, under the name of George. Apparently he changed his name to William A. Whitney after the death of his brother William in 1877, and under that name is found in the censuses of 1900, 1910, and 1920.
