Sarah7 Whitney (John6, (Isaiah5, Isaiah4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), daughter of John6 and Hannah (Atherton) Whitney, was born 3 Sep 1787, Harvard, MA [birth record not found], and died 31 Fec 1858, Pierceton, IN, aged 71 years 3 months 27 days. She was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, IN. A plaque on her grave reads, "Sarah Whitney Chaplin, daughter of a Rev. Soldier. Erected by the Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter, DAR."[1] She was also known as Sally.

She married, 11 Nov 1807, prob. VT [marriage record not found], James Chaplin, son of David and Prudence (Peirce) Chaplin, and a seventh generation descendant of John1 Whitney. He was born 6 Jul 1784, Lunenburg, MA, and died 6 May 1865, Kosciusko Co., IN, aged 80 years 10 months. He was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, IN.[2]

It is alleged that he was a Sergeant, 4th Maryland Militia, War of 1812.[3] Why a man living in Vermont would serve in a Maryland unit is unexplained.

From A Standard History of Kosciusko County, Indiana (An Authentic Narrative of the Past, with Particular Attention to the Modern Era in the Commercial, Industrial, Educational, Civic and Social Development. A Chronicle of the People, with Family Lineage and Memoirs) by L. W. Royse, Vol. II (Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago & New York, 1919).

p. 314:
"While the first town and postoffice in the county were at South Whitley, and Cleveland township was the first organized, there were two or three, perhaps more, settlers in Smith township prior to the Eel River settlement. It is impossible to ascertain who was the very first settler or to determine the priority of several of the first ones. James Chaplin lived on section 7 in 1835 and blazed a trail or road from his farm to intersect the Squawbuck trail in Richland township. This was the highway to Oswego and Turkey Prairie."
p. 676:
"James Chaplin was a son of David Chaplin. The latter's great-grandfather, whose name was probably also David, came from England about 1690 accompanied by a brother and settled in Massachusetts, probably near Boston, and later in Lunenberg, Worcester County. James Chaplin was born in Lunenberg, July 6, 1778. There were four sons and four daughters in the family of James Chaplin, three of the sons becoming ministers. Joseph Chaplin, the great-uncle of James, served through the Revolutionary war, and one of his brothers in the War of 1812. James Chaplin and Sally Whitney were married about 1808. Sally Whitney's father, John Whitney, was a soldier in the Revolution and served til its close. He again entered his country's service and was stationed on the Oconee River a few miles below Milledgeville, Georgia, from 1793 until 1800. He died April 20, 1800."
